This may not be relevant to most readers and occasional visitors but the consequences seem pretty extreme and costly so I thought I'd pass it along.
Just very recently law enforcement, Federal I believe, has started to vigorously enforce laws prohibiting Mexican citizens from driving US registered vehicles. It seems there is a special task force recently active in the area enforcing the law. I don't have all the details and some say it is a new law. My understanding has been ( but I could be incorrect on this) that a Mexican can drive your US plated vehicle If you are present in the vehicle or if the driver has ID with the same last name as on the registration. Otherwise the vehicle can be confiscated, the driver jailed, and a large fine levied. I got this description from a Hacienda abogado friend a couple of years ago. Some believe that all is OK if the driver possesses a valid US driver's license.
A friend here just yesterday had a vehicle and an employee detained because the employee was Mexican and the vehicle was registered in Texas. For whatever reason they are taking the vehicles and drivers to Sonoyta. My friend said he had to pay upwards of $60,000 pesos to get the vehicle returned and the driver out of jail. Apparently the driver will be sent to Nogales for 3 years if the fine is not paid. Friend was in Sonoyta and reported that while he was in the appropriate office negotiating 3 additional law breakers were brought in. Sounds rather draconian.
