I don't shop at Oxxo normally and now that I know that the money doesn't stay in Mexico, I am glad. Does the money I would spend at the Bodega stay in Mexico? I just want to support local businesses. I have no idea why my font changed....Can we get a list of outside businesses so we can avoid them?

Where does the money go?

Lovin it in RP!
Oxxo is owned by Tecate which in turn is owned by Heineken - but to say the money doesn't stay here is only partially correct. Think of the checkers, the stockers, the delivery guys bringing products to the store etc...they have a steady job because of Oxxo. That translates into local economy pesos. The store offers something not found before their arrival. Is it necessary? That's debatable. They are super convenient though. I pay my TelMex, TelCel and Electric bills there saving me a trip into town and a wait in line. I am glad there is one 2 blocks from my house. I am not a big business proponent but I do like the things they offer.

Im not an economist, sh1t let's be real I hardly passed economics but the one thing that I learned is that OXXO is still part of MEXICO GDP so therefor it is most definitely helping the country of Mexico and I agree with Russ, the OXXO store doesnt run itself. Those are jobs and the more OXXO the merrier IMHO. You had two stores before, Reggies 8/12 and another one that Ive heard mentioned on here before but cant remember, think about that, those were Im sure family owned. Therefor the money wasnt goign outside of the family and they sure as hell werent employing shifts of clerks so if you think about it OXXO might be even better for the town of Rocky Point then the family owned store. I understand why some of the forum members are upset about OXXO because they had a personal relationship with Reggies and they feel bad for them but on a whole, OXXO is not only good for Rocky Point, its good for the country of Mexico. OXXO Stores ↑ LOCAL JOBS ↑ MEXICO GDP ↑. Reggies is run by the owner, they dont employ anyone, OXXO pry has anywhere from 4-6 employees per store, not to mention as RUSS stated the jobs that are created by the truck drivers and store stockers. These are local economy jobs. Why would you complain about a company employing people? It's not like these stores are run by robots, these are NOT vending machines! FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The sad part about OXXO's is that it is a growing trend that happened in the US 40-50 years ago, the corporations are taking everything over.
There used to be butcher shops, bakeries, soda and candy stores, small deli's etc, now all that has to be bought at Safeway, Frys, Albertson's, Circle K's
and crappy Subway's (there are some small exceptions).
There used to be lumber yards, hardware stores, small dept stores, now it is Home Depot, Lowes, Macy's with Ace hardware being still around.

In RP sadly, there are OXXO's every 2 blocks, Bodega, Sam's club, Super Ley, that are replacing the small businesses we used to know,
sadly one day Los Pinos will be replaced by a Home Depot. With this we lose all the knowledge that the people working in the small stores have
only to be replaced by another less knowlegible person who doesn't have that knowledge because they were never trained and it was never passed down.
Example go to a HD and and ask some questions and usually you walk away still looking for the answer, go into an Ace HW and usually you get an answer or
the advice you needed instead of "Do you want the replacement warranty on that item"?
Off my Soap Box!

I am not against progress but from what I have seen in my life, some change is great but it does come at a price

Brokenwave, you are correct. Although I accept change, change is not always necessarily a good thing.

Do you remember when you could pull into the corner gas station and they would actually change a tire, change the oil, or do repair work on your car? Try finding that anywhere these days. Mom and Pop business has pretty much become a thing of the past, unless of course, Mom and Pop buy a franchise.

Yeah, I used to work at a gas station when I was in high school, so I've been here awhile, they offered it all, except the only food came from a snack machine.
Washing windows was mandatory, I rarely got a tip, free tire check and air. The repair work was reasonably priced not like todays $100+ per hour.

Franchises are just the fingers of big companies to extend their brand. Many franchises do ok, not many who make a ton of $$, because the
parent company is always getting their 10%. Look at the franchise websites, it will shock you at all the names we know that are franchises.

I keep telling myself that change is good, not so much these days. At least when I'm in Cholla the change is much less apparent. LOL

I thought the original topic had to do with keeping money and jobs in town? You might not personally like it but OXXO in town is a good thing and that is fact.

Asi es compa, people that frequent oxxo's don't have fancy cars and unlimited funds, they can pay bills, buy phone time, make calls in some places. I don't buy much stuff there myself, but when I give people rides the first stop is an oxxo. Hey like the crystal palace went down so will most of the older stuff!

FEMSA
Femsa is a Mexican Corp.
I entered a bunch on this topic but Uncle Carlos Skinny dumped the net AGAIN and i lost it. Horrible service.

Oxxos are franchises often operated day to day by the franchisee. The Oxxo that put Reggies down is owned by a couple that are there every day. Oxxo builds the building and supplies the stock, the franchisee provides the land (I think) . Oxxo runs an incredibly efficient system to supply the stores. Each item scanned at sale enters an order for that item at a central warehouse where the order is picked, packed and delivered withing a day or so. Some suppliers are directly tapped into this system and deliver their stuff direct to the store. Franchisees are trained and suprvised like McDonalds does to insure good service. Not sure who selects the actual products to stock but may be mutual agreement on some stuff. Franchisees make a percentage off sales. It is an extremely modern and efficient system. Friend here swears that Oxxo's prices are less on staples than Super Ley, I have not confirmed that. Yes it and many other large chains mentioned here have put the smaller stores out of business and that's because we the people shop by price, not the corporation's fault. They do not pay clerks well anywhere and it is the same here, but it's a job and they do get the benefits. There are so many built because Mexicans still want to be able to walk to the store cause may have no car ! Yes bad for the little tiendas but all in all good for the people in convenience, selection and jobs. As a friend told me who had a little neighborhood tienda in Kino "You won't make any money but you will not go hungry either".

Don't get me wrong, I loved the little old hardware store near my house where I could walk in carrying some broken pieces of whatever and Willy would lead me up and down the isle picking off stuff I needed to make the repair. Yep, Home Depot opened right next door and well, Corrales Hardware is now a memory, but then I did not have to make the 15 mile round trip to buy a 2x4 either..

On the locally owned store question, try Penasco Hardware, Numeros, Rocky Imports and Salmos. Last 3 are general merchandise stores owned by three family members. There are still a couple of small but well stocked grocerery stores as well. An Oxxo alternative is the Michigan Market on Campeche. There is a very active and popular grocery store on Benito Juarez, next to the party store, the one they park out into the street !!

Does anyone know if the Super Las Palmas grocery on Constitution is ever going to re-open, 4 weeks ago the doors were open with people working inside.
the store in Las Brisas is super with great people who will go the extra km to help you out. One of the owners carried 2-5 gal water bottles out to my car, the butcher
is also a great employee, speaks english perfectly and knows his product.
It is a shame most people shop for price, I don't mind spending a little extra, because the service is worth it.
