i believe those would be leather back jacks. awesome grouper bait. and boy do they stink if you cut them open.

I agree ReelHard they are BIGJAW LEATHERJACKETS (Oligoplites altus) Pez mundo... Body silvery, scales give skin a finely wrinkled leathery appearance... Common in estuaries, Bahia Magdallena and throughout the Gulf to Ecuuator... they can reach 2 ft.

I have heard that you should be careful handling them because of the little spines in front of the dorsil fin can pack a sting like a sculpin...

yes they do give a good sting. trust me i know from experience. dont know if it would be as bad a sculpin have not had the pleasure of getting stuck by one of those yet. but if you do get stuck you can peel the skin off the fish and rub the back side of it on the wound and it is suppose to get rid of the stinging.

I trust you... I really don't want to experience the thrill of being stuck by any fish... I have a friend that got stuck by a sculpin (stone scorpion fish) after I had told him to just cut the line... and his last words were "trust me" Marcos I know what I am OUCH... (explicative language)... his hand swelled three times it's size in a matter of minutes...
