I have always heard a different story as to this date:
Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was
manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars
of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was
to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New
York This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise
ever delivered to Mexico . But as we know, the great ship did not make
it to New York . The ship hit an iceberg and sank. The people of
Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its
delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great,
that they declared a National Day of Mourning.
The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known,
of course, as -
Sinko De Mayo.

Now that Cinco De Mayo is over....found this in an articul...
“Cinco de Mayo” is not Mexican independence day, which occurs on September 16th. It isn’t even known as Cinco de Mayo in the Pueblo region where the occasion is observed. It honors a victory Mexican forces won over a larger, French force in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Texans fought alongside Mexicans. Mexico, as a whole, does not observe the event. But here’s the kicker; Cinco de Mayo was invented as a beer marketing opportunity.
From Business Insider: “In the early 1980s, Anheuser-Busch and Miller Company created Hispanic Marketing departments and began sponsoring Cinco de Mayo celebrations…Decades later the party remains a key means of marketing to the Hispanic beer market.”That party really arrived in 1989, when Corona Extra finished parlaying the myth into material existence.
