Reporting a Crime.

If you are, or think that you have been the victim of a crime, report it to the District Attorney´s office, (known as Ministerio Publico). Keep in mind that the Police´s role is to prevent a crime or to take action during the actual crime but does not prosecute them.

The Ministerio Publico´s functions include the investigation and prosecution of crimes, thus if the crime has already been commited, report it and/or file charges.

Many expats who have been victims of crimes simply file a Police report when they should be reporting them to the Ministerio Publico, thus cases do not get investigated nor prosecuted .

Remember, if you want a crime to be prosecuted you must file charges with the Ministerio Publico del Fuero Comun NOT with the Police. Secure a case number for the investigation and follow up on the case to offer witnesses and evidence.

Also, the Ministerio Publico is not the Federales, and the detectives that work for that agency are known as Policia Ministerial (formerly Policia Judicial).
