U.S. marshals say they have arrested three fugitives this past week who had fled to Mexico.
They were found and arrested through the United States Marshals Service Mexico Investigative Liaison, a cross-border investigation program.
William Carl Freeman, 31, had been wanted by the Scottsdale Police Department since 2007, accused of auto theft, fleeing from a police vehicle and false reporting. He also had been sought by California authorities who accused him of battery, robbery, hit and run, and violating parole on underlying burglary charges.
Marshals say they discovered that Freeman had fled to Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, also known as Rocky Point, and living under a false name. Marshals worked with Mexican authorities to have him deported from Mexico, and on Jan. 10, Freeman was arrested by marshals at the Lukeville, Arizona port of entry.
Michael Martinez, 28, a convicted child predator recently released from prison, was wanted for allegedly having recent contact with a child in violation of his release terms. He had fled to Rocky Point, but Mexican authorities turned him over to marshals on Jan. 9.
Guillermo Ulloa, 32, was wanted in Maricopa County in connection with multiple counts of sexual exploitation and luring of a minor. Ulloa was located in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, by marshals in El Paso, Texas, and Mexican law enforcement agencies. He was arrested on Jan. 4.
“Many fugitives hold the mistaken belief that by running to Mexico, they are suddenly outside the reach of United States law enforcement,” said David P. Gonzales, U.S. marshal for the District of Arizona, in a press release. “However, the arrests of these three career criminals make it clear that through close cooperation with Mexican law enforcement authorities, the U.S. Marshals Service will continue to hunt down and capture fugitives no matter where they flee.”
