Hello all, about to change my phone carrier and since I spend more time in Rocky Point I was wondering who has the best plan for calling and texting back to the US from Rocky Point.
Landshark
T-Mobile Offers unlimited international data & text in over 120 countries and destinations, at no extra charge, Mexico included. Seems like calls are .35/min with my plan.

Problem with Tmobile is they push you on movie star towers even if telcel is way better..,this could get you killed on the water...In Santo Tomas movie star sucks and they still keep telcel locked

This could get you killed.......omg are you serious? find a place in your life you dont have to bang on the negative...... good grief dude you live to be 70-or 80? get a grip and life....cell phones won't cost you your life - that is just beyond the pale. The telcel cartel wants to kill Americans in Mexican waters....what a story that would be.... lol just funny and intensely sad. Move on my pal, move on......

Easy van man...the issue is the crooks at telcel ( and like many Mexican companies it is anti consumer) rig the T-Mobile deal in there favor. This could get you killed as in the case of an accident on some of the Caborca coast or out in a boat with a problem your phone will not work.At the same time the guy with say a ATT go phone is allowed on telcel and does not end up lying next to his ATV in the back county wishing he was not a T-Mobile customer.

I have noticed that. A few years back I got Telcel most of the time and Moviestar occasionally. Now the opposite and Moviestar isn't as good.

Thanks for putting me in a box Carlos Slim....Telcel is a evil corporation if there ever was one but unlike you and Mr. Sunshine Russ I am a actual customer that has been using Telcels overpriced plans and for the last 2 years the T-Mobile Mexico service.....I have spent hours ( well maybe 3) on the line with tech and special problems department...the bottom line is telcel just lies to the T-Mobile engineers about signals..I am providing advice from a user what are you providing Teaturd

In Mexico T-Mobile costs me 20 cents per minute and works most places I've used it. Texts and 3g data is free, I also use Google voice to make wi fi calls for 5 cents per minute.
On real busy weekends sometimes you will have to wait for the system to unclog.

If US cell services when traveling in places where services were sketchy caused me concern, I would subscribe to a sat phone system.
Since fear isn't a main cocern in my travels, I will just use my US based T-Mobile service.
dmcauley
I use AT&T and just like many I get picked up frequently by movie star and even though it doesn't change the tel-cel rate it is not as convenient. Most of the time I get the tel cel connection but lately I've been getting moviestar more frequently.

This Teaturd uses Telcel when in Mexico and is very pleased with the service and my plan gives me low cost calling to the states. Is there room for competition......Yes definitely.

I'm a big fan of T-Mobile because the free international data and text, which used to get expensive for me with AT&T. The voice rates are much cheaper too. I love not having to worry about roaming settings and finding wifi to get emails, etc. Coverage and service has been fine.

I think you guys might have scared Dan Juan away
Dan Juan
Thanks all! Sounds like I'm going to sign up with T Mobile!

Dan... Just remember that while T-Mobile is definitely best for Mexico travel, it's clearly a step behind Verizon as far as coverage in the US. I work in telecom and T-Mobile doesn't exactly have the best reputation as far as investment in their network.

I wouldn't say a whole step behind.
T-Mobile's coverage is better than Verizon in some places and Verizon's is better in others. It all depends on where you are.
T-Mobile's coverage wasn't as good 4 years ago when I switched compared to coming from Verizon, but now it's much better.
Yes they are still playing catch up.
If T-Mob has 95% of the coverage and is 40% less per month that is a no brainer.
I have 8 phones on my plan, 1 line has unlimited data and 7 lines with 2.5gb per month each, I pay $175 per month, yes that's 8 lines.
And my international usage costs are minimal.
I have friends who are paying $130 per month for 2 lines with some data with Verizon. Go figure.
If people are so addicted to their phones and can't deal with not being connected 24/7, Go with what works.
I can turn off my phone and not miss anything many hours a day.;)

If you go toward Desemboque avoid Tmobile....telcel is locked and movie star is weak

I use Verizon, and on the Mexican plan for $20 a month get 1000 minutes in Mexico. I don't know if they still have the plan. Signal is good and it does switch between TelCel and the other carrier there. Have to have time in the states tho, as we go up to Yuma and get stateside minutes in there.

T-Mobile is doing it again, starting in mid July if you are on the simple choice, pre and post paid plans you will be able to use your phones
in Mexico and Canada for no extra fees.
Free calls, texting and 3G/4G data (4G if it's been implemented on the local carriers) up to your plans limit at no additional costs.

We will see how this works out, because I know on busy weekends RP's local networks capacity are clogged up due to the lack of bandwidth
maybe some additional capacity will open up for everyone.
And RP is on T-Mobiles 4G list,

In case you are wondering, No, I don't work for T-Mobile only a satisfied customer for 4 years.

Last weekend they had a special free upgrade for this plan to unlimited everything and 17GB for HotSpot. I just happened to be in a T-Mobile store. I am also very glad to hear about the above. It is a shame they don't have the greatest coverage.
El Tiburon
Probably explains the great rates.

This thread is about cell phones...I get that. But if the objective is to be able to call back to the U.S. Or Canada, and you have wifi available, Internet phones such as MagicJack work well and cost nothing to use.
brokenwave
Magic Jack in a good service, if I wasn't already on T-Mobile, a Magic jack would be necessary to replace a land line.

With T-Mobile, I like that you can call, (text and use data) from the US to Mexico or Mexico to the US or even within Mexico without doing anything else at zero cost.

There is a new service coming to RP next year that will give you 10mbs internet, TV for about $25 per month, it is run by one of the large Mexico TV networks.
It's name? IZZI.

It starts tomorrow if you have a Simple Choice plan, I curious to see if Tel-Cell and Movistar in RP are supporting 4G yet?
Can anyone confirm this?

Or I will, have to wait until end of Sept. to find out.

I got travel pass from Verizon yesterday. $2 a day if I use it. Text, call, send photos. All my calls will ring in Mexico just like if I were in Green Valley AZ..
mis2810
I have the T-Mobile plan and use Telcel while here in Penasco (Movistar sucks). When I turn off my wi-fi all I see on the phone is LTE, so not sure about 4G yet.
HILL BOY
Cost me $15.00 per thru Verizon no contract stay about two weeks per visit so about the same as $2.00 per day.

T-Mobile works great, as Mis2810 said, switch the carrier to Telcel because Movistar's data is really slow. Using Telcel, I get 3G, 4G or LTE depending where I am in RP.
The 4G/LTE speeds are usually better than in the states. On our trip to Santo Tomas my kid's said there was 4G data the whole way.

The best part about T-Mobile is that it includes mobile hotspots, free text's and call's while I'm in Mexico for less than $200
per month for 8 lines with 6GB of data each.

I am glad Verizon and the other carriers are making it less costly to use your phone in Mexico.
Wood Spinner
Go for T-Mobile in Mexico. My service there is better than in Casa Grande And no extra chgs.

Half as much if you used it everyday

I did Verizon travel passport and it was $2.00 a day when I used it.

Good news for Verizon users, looks like they are climbing on the using your phone in Mexico for free Bandwagon, but only for some customers.
Per the article I read, Verizon customers have unlimited calling from the U.S. to Mexico and Canada.
This feature will reportedly be included with XL and XXL plans, while customers on S, M, and L plans can pay extra to get it.

Unlike T-Mobile plans you can be on their basic plans and it has been free for 1 year now.
It will be announced next month.
brokenwave
It's official, Verizon is offering some new features and also raising the costs of their plans if you choose to upgrade.
From the announcement:

As part of today's announcements, Verizon also said that customers in the XL or larger plans can get unlimited talk and text from the U.S. to Mexico and Canada and also continue to use their data plan and received unlimited talk and text when visiting those countries. On smaller plans, you can pay $5 per line per month for calls from the U.S to Mexico and Canada. To roam with your data and unlimited talk and text in Canada or Mexico,
a Verizon Travel Pass feature costs $2 per day per line, for existing plans, unless you are on one of the new XL and larger plans.

I just paid for my month of TelCel service for my smart phone. 502 pesos, this phone works in the USA and Canada for the same price. I have never had a bill higher than 550 except when I went to Italy and Spain, they offered a package for calls and data for 250 pesos and it lasted for my whole trip. so 502 divided by like 17.5.........it is super inexpensive as phones go and it provides all the service I need.
Landshark
That's a great price Russ. What type of plan is it? Limits on data, text, minutes? Roaming charges?

No roaming in the USA or Canada, the gb usage has limits on data but who cares? I don't need you tube streaming when I am north of the line. We had uninterrupted service in London, Genoa and Barcelona as if I was home for about 15 bux USA. Mexicans will not pay for things they do not need and the market reacts to that.

I will be returning to PP this winter and I'm looking forward to using Google's new Project Fi service there. We just returned from a trip to Los Cabos where I tested it for the first time outside our home in New Mexico. While in Mexico, it piggy-backed off of Telcel's network so we had a constant LTE signal everywhere. And all part of the same basic Google plan ($20/month unlimited voice & text, $10/GB data, no contract).

So if Telcell or T-Mobile have a large presence in PP, we should be all set to go w/o having to get a local SIM card for once.

Dave,
I have that service and there is an additional charge calling to and from Mexico. It is listed separately under international usage. Only applies if you don't use Wifi. Still a great service.

I switched to Metro Pcs about six months ago. Unlimited talk, text & data for $45.00 including Mexico. 3Gig of 4G.
I have used it in San Carlos and RP and it worked great It was just like being in the states, except for the view.
In Mexico, it does switch over to Telcel mostly, but seems to pick up the best available signal because Movie Star came up once for
a brief period.
