I was going to head up early on the Thursday the 3rd, but just found out the Tucson Area Music Awards are that night--I'm supposed to be there because I'm on the critics' panel. Meh. Maybe we can beat the midnight border closing after Calexico plays!
15-day forecast is calling for 103 by the 31st. Think we'll be 100+ the whole weekend?
Oh, we'll stop by the CTC, you betcha'. You can always count on them not closing the bar down early, dead weekend or not. And if it's too muggy to hang out at the taco stands afterward, there's always the chilly 24-hour El Sombrero right around the corner. They've even got Wi-Fi!
JIM... this has all the makings for a great video for the bar... now if you only had tricycles to have tricycle races (for the adults)... it could become a yearly event to raise money for the kids and the schools... (it's just a thought)
-key in the harp time travel music-
way back in 1974 when I was a junior in high school, we skipped school the friday before the labor day holiday and went to a city park and got drunk (as kids often did in small rural towns in Illinois)
after several hours of partying it came time to decide "do I spend my last 69 cents for another bottle of Ripple Pagan Pink? or do we all pool our money together and give it as a donation to the Jerry Lewis MD Telethon? we all decided to do the latter, and this was the beginning of "D for D" a.k.a. "Drunks for Dystrophy"
-key in the time travel music again-
skip ahead to the year 1982 (my last summer in Illinois before moving to AZ) and "D for D" had become a regular event in our town. the city would snow-fence off the entire park.
Del Monte Farms would drop off a truckload of sweet corn which we cooked and given away to all at the party, local butchers would donate steaks to be sold, and of course there was beer... plenty of beer...
the city would allow us to go through 33 kegs of beer. didn't know where they came up with that number until it came time to pay for it, and we then found out one of my buddys father that owned the local Pabst distributorship had donated it.
that year we had collected and turned in over $5000.00 in donations to the Jerry Lewis MD Telethon... every labor day brings back fond memories of getting totally drunk and actually doing some good and helping out someone less fortunate...
funny how people become far more generous when they get all "poop-faced"
I'm open to the tricycle race idea or any other charity idea/event that we could put together at the bar. I think it is around 10,000 sq ft so there's plenty of room. I may need some help procuring some trikes though. I don't know where I would begin finding them here. Maybe if someone sees one at a yard sale? I could reimburse you when you got here. Just a thought. So Mark, since this is your brainchild, are you going to help organize this thing and get it going?
My wife and I enjoy going to garage sales, put up the parameters for the tricycles and I will start looking. What time do people plan on meeting at the CTC labor day weekend?
I was thinking like 4 to 6 trikes to start and the bigger the better... I know my knees don't bend as well as they used too... and I'm sure if there are any extra trikes they would make some little tikes happy....
Jim what about start time? do we go all weekend with the prelims? and the final on monday? I guess that depends on how much everyone can consume...
I disqualify myself because I'm a nondrinker and it would be an unfair advantage for all those that do...
I'll be looking for some too, I just bought a enclosed trailer for the Bis (rockypointrides.com, another little plug) so if anybody in Tucson find some and needs a way to take them down , let me know I might be able to fit afew in the trailer!!
thanks Inka... last evening Jim and I began discussions on the race rules and the type of track (oval, sebring, figure 8) any suggestions are welcome...
so far we have come to one conclusion... call me crazy... but anyone that will be participating in this event is either, going to be very drunk or crazy... (I don't drink)

Close off the street in front of the bar and do it out there!!!
Just a thought....when I was involved in some jetski racing (endurance), we were in classes (based on age)....if you can get enough entrants (crazy people...LOL), split it up so that some of the old farts have a chance and don't have to race against any young'uns....then have a race of all the winners for "King of the Trike"....by that time, the young'uns should all be so drunk and dying from laughter, the old farts will take it all!!! Just a thought!

Seadweller...Are you going to video this???
Would love to see it.
RPJ yes, that is kind of what we would have to do joe just to keep it competitive...
LPH... and yes I plan on videoing this event... maybe even with a helmet cam...

joe... these will be multi lap races, and since these will be alchohol fueled trikes, there will be pitstops involved to refuel... the young'uns will either need more pitstops or need to take on more hi-octane fuel while in the pits...
Wow, you guys are doing a great job of putting things together. Let me know when I need to get involved and what I need to do to help out. This whole bar business is easier than I expected. I'm looking forward to this. Hopefull lots of fun for all and some good money for charity. Mark, sorry we didn't have more time to talk yesterday. It was a little crazy and I had a couple beers in me. Put it together and I'm in. I'll try to call you tomorrow.

Hey Jim... not a problem... I had a great time runnin with the young'uns as RPJ might say... this is our first attempt and it is on a short notice... so even if all we accomplish is having some fun, and starting a new tradition (trike races) it will be all worth it...
OK Matt your in... in fact I guess I will at some point need to start to register all that care to be participants, so we can get a race schedule planned out...
Jim if we don't get enough tricycles we may need to put wheels on some of your barstools...
Don't forget that without trikes there can't be a race. Please send a PM to Mark or I if you can bring one (or more) so that we know where we stand. Thanks to Mark for the idea and the effort and to everyone else for all the interest.
I checked it out www.tricycleracing.com seems to be a fairly new site but he has some cool trikes and good ideas like Topless Tricycle Races... thanks for the link george
don't worry I intend to keep my top on at all times...
Jim this is an event to raise money for the kids... I think the Topless Races would go over better during the Bike Week... but I'm glad I got your attention...
I'll look into some trikes this week. Might even get some donations from some friends' companies for a little advertising 'fee'???? Posters and stuff, I mean.
I am beginning to believe that you guys are actually serious about this. I kept waiting for the punchline.:)
come on Jim, you're a senior member you should now by now when we are joking and when we are not ;-)
I have been looking for trikes and let me tell you those big wheels are hard to come by!!!
Finally, after trying for almost a years I have my avatar in place!! :eek3:
Wow. Who knew that people could be so bored or so nuts. The foam pits looked fun until the guy missed. Guess I won't be trying it anytime soon. Yes we are serious about trike races. Mark is in charge, has a great charity and is on top of things. Let him know if you can contribute or want to participate. Sounds like we'll have some good prizes for the winners. The more people who commit to participate will determine the schedule. If we need more than one day we can do it. BTW, I measured today and the bar is a little more than 7000 square feet not 10,000 like I mentioned before. Still plenty of room for lots of activities.
That was BADA$$!!! Wish I could do that stuff....oh, wait I don't have near that big a set of CAJONES!!!!
Penasco Pirate and seadweller, I am sure you do have a pair of CAJONES probably even bigger than him, I think that what you mean is a pair of COJONES!! AKA huevos, testis, etc. CAJONES is just a box/drawers but not the anatomical part of ther human body.
Sorry to correct, I had a visual and it did look pretty funny watching you guys riding the big whells with a pair of cajones in between your legs :eek3:
if he wasn't so good at doing these insane jumps I'm sure he could find a future in being a crash test dummy...
in the early sixties my cousins was a test driver for Ford Co. somewhere in Nebraska, and I remember him coming home, Peru, in forced vacations for as few month in a full body cast, he loved it and got paid enough to make him go back again and again, he did destroy quite a few mustangs and the best part he did not had to pay for them!!!
Thanks to him my father had the first 1965 mustang fast back in Peru, of course my mother was the speed demond and she was!!! it was fun!!! I remember I fitted perfect in the small back seat on those days of course, I think I would not fit now even if ten guys push me in!!
Hey Inka-I am a garage sale fanatic and just checked out Craigslist for ones going on this weekend. There are a few that, from their description, might possibly have trikes for sale. I live in Vail (AZ-many people think I'm referring to Colorado!), so I will check out as many as I can on the eastside, explain to sellers what the purpose of the trikes are for, and hopefully can talk them into a fair price (or free for a good cause?). Unfortunately, we will not be able to come down that weekend so transporting them would be out of the question. I'll let you know what I find and then go from there (as far as hooking up with you to take them down if I find any).

yeah big huevos... that's what I meant... in any case this Travis dude must have some bigguns... and by the looks of it they have been scrambled on more than just a couple of occasions...

Much Thx to you Mark & your Wife for helping out the kids of Penasco...
Also to the people that donate toward the cause...
I just want to say that we couldn't do this without all the help we receive from our local sponsors who donate their services or goods which in turn we use as prizes for our events...
and most of all thanks to all of you, who give donations of school supplies, medical equiptment (wheelchairs and such) time and money...
Looked all over Craigslist...nothing worth buying there. Toys 'r' Us is out of stock. Harbor Freight Tools has some but they are $50.00 a peice. Anybody wanna go in with me? I'd be willing to buy atleast one, maybe two.
Hey you don't need to spend big bucks to do this it's just an idea and we can work at it... if it doesn't happen we can all still get together and maybe you can see who can roll me the farthest or something... but $50.00 is a bit pricey to be acting childish...
Someone who lives down there should check out all those outdoor "shops" on the street along Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez...that's the street that angles off to the left at the first light coming into town on Benito Juarez....there may be some trikes for sale there from all the yard/garage sales of Phoenix/Tucson!!! :-D:evil:
Do you need help making a flyer for online and posting around town? Once you get the all the vital info and the sponsor names I can throw something together I think you'll like. ;)

that's awesome... thanks... hopefully we will obtain enough trikes to be able to pull this off...
Hi sheryl, nah not really. How You been are things getting better?
DARN it, I used it to describe his lack of them....must get my Rosetta Stone program out again, but they don't teach those words.
Heard today that he's been sneaking around lying about his whereabouts to avoid being served court papers-but he got caught. Wish I could be there to watch him sweat! He just keeps digging a bigger hole. Call me crazy, but I LIKE IT! He is showing his true character...or lack thereof.
You been there all summer? I used to think EVERYbody left on July 1st! It's been a wonderful, rainy summer here in Denver. Seadweller's videos are keeping Linda and I entertained and we think about all the times we took the kayaks out to try to float by the dolphins...miss that ocean!
What about pelotas? Does that not translate correctly?
You are right M&T, in reality any verbal word discribing roundness or that shape, pelotas, bolas, huevos and the hundreds of slang terms used can be use to discribe that section in the lower middle section of the male body and most of time also the upper toraxic section of the female anatomy and so many more that after 25 years of speaking english it just takes time for me to remember.
PS: and each spanish speaking country will have hundreds different from the next. I personally never heard TALLEGAS sound like "tall egos" like Hitler, no, no he was short like Napolion!!
I'll make any arrangements I can to pick up said trikes. PM me and we can set something up. My spanish is not all that great...I try to sound out the words I can't spell!

Thanks, Ink. I will add those to my vocabulary! Never know when they might come in handy!
I used to call Tecate my Spanish in a can... now that I no longer drink my Espanglish really sucks... :-o
Oh man, the good old day's. I remember going to the distributer and the deposit was more than the beer.
If I still drank, I'd be keeping company with HAPPY:-D
Hah! No kidding...What's a "case" (20) of Pacifico going for these days in Pesos? I've been doing cans for the last couple of years. Too much of a balancing act to be bothered with, especially when you're staying way out of town or with a light drinker.
"We have to get ANOTHER case???"
No WAY of hiding how many you've had when you're searching for that 20th bottle!
Well, it took a few days but found the first trike and it is almost ready for racing, minor engine touch ups, crankshaft (pedals) are in place however the pistons (tires) need repairs!!! and still looking for more!!!!
I was getting worried. No one had said anything for awhile and time is getting short. Thanks Ink. Hopefully we can get a few more. I have friends looking also. Murphys Law - when you don't need something they are everywhere, but when you want one there are none to be found. I saw a few on the Tucson Craigslist but they all looked very very small. As soon as we are sure that this can happen, I will announce it on the website and facebook. I'll also send an email to all my PP contacts. We may even talk Rosie into a small mention in her newspaper. (Are you out there Rosie?) Hope we can pull it off.
You got it Jim and it is big enough for a pony keg of TECATE with the syphon hooked straight into my helmet's mouth piece, Chuck I need and emoticon with a big thumbs up here!!!
