I heard the marines shot the crap out of them ..automatic weapon fire makes you want to have a few smuggled frozen turkeys in the truck to act as bulletproofing

The shootout was on km 85 that's by the 2 story vacant sunburst house, real nice looking house, anyway near one of our prominent forum members, kind of upsetting.
Rumors were flying yesterday about this shooting. I did not post anything because they were conflicting rumors and posting would have created a lot of useless chatter. Hopefully things will calm down now. Sounds like law enforcement did their job.
Actually I was thinking of a mohawk, but I already have a reverse mohawk so guess I'll leave thing alone for now.
A friend of mine, also with a casa in Cholla, told me to be careful as a border patrol friend of hers said the
drug cartels were traveling in groups between Lukeville and PP. Police and military involved. Road blocks and such.
I hope it settles down before next week.

We just traveled to the border yesterday, there were no road blocks and not to be rude sometimes the BP will embellish these things just a tad. Naomi and I are way more concerned about our roof because of the rain.

Rolling gun battle from Sonoyta to the outskirts of Puerto Penasco and you think it is no big deal?
Well if I had the Mexican Marines and maybe state police that works for a different cartel chasing my crew and I came upon a tourist van headed to the Pinacates or home cruise port they would all be Duct taped to my sawed off while we negotiated my safe passage.
It was a big deal for the Sonoita police who could not stop the sicarios, but when they arrived in Penasco and in Miramar our local forces taught them not to mess around in the tourist areas.
Everybody does their jobs, I take people on tour, I leave the bad guys alone, the marines take out the bad guys - they leave the tour guy alone. The tourist want to drink around town and they have nothing to do with the bad guys, they are left alone. If I want to insist on making every piece of news that is bad part or our life....Jerry can do it. Life is good and everybody has their job, get in their face and it may fall apart. So Jerry I will try to not get in your biz of reporting anything bad in your effort to info everybody about things that dont involve them. When I talk to the locals about this event....its no concern, the bad guys for the most part were very unwelcome by all. But hey Jerry, thanks for trying to sensationalize everything bad........I especially like the term "RUNNING gun battles" yeah the cops should wait till the perps park or something lol, sorry your thought process brinks on silly
Hey ,I hope the cone of silence you operate in is bullet proof...really do.....but me,I like to tell my friends when a dangerous situation is happening.Road issues, bad cops, gangster crap.....what's the harm?

If everyone lived like you .....nobody would do nothing.
It's a dangerous world out the Jer.
As adults we know that.
There's a lot of bad news out there Jer.
We don't need a keyboard patriot to remind us of that Jer.
When you post the specifics about a place and determine it's not safe you have by default told everyone that other places are safe. Think for your self travel smart use your head keep your eyes open and have as much fun as you can. Or stay at home read the news that non-news people copy and paste and never leave your house...........I'll vote........I'll go do something instead! AJUA "Life is Good"

I dont need "bullet proof" I just need "paranoid proof" and I think I have that covered. I don't think they make a pill for that but you may need to pursue it.
Smug but so were those real estate s***heads that called Kenny and me haters and idiots when we warned people the party was over. We even saved some people's life savings...felt pretty good sharing a bit of experience but hey your job here to jamb one more newbie in the van.
I'm sure there are plenty out here "thanking you for your service" it's not even close to the same thing. but whatever you are in control of the negative button..who am I to say no? Good for you and Kenney sitting there on the sidelines claiming you know but really you don't know, glad to know you are a team......awesome....keep up the good work! Fear sells we all know that. Erstwhile (look it up).....real happy life goes on, with or without you! I have over 60 people in town for tours...I am sure none of them will be injured in their tours of RP, if one is I will let you know so you can be of service to whoever buys or drinks your bad ju ju
Glad you have it all figured, but in the real world a few things are in flux such as the road issues from Penasco south could get a guy killed.Terry just gave a piece of advise to a forum reader that might have been a life saver. It is peak harvest season and the cartel truce may be ending. woud it have hurt one of you locals to note that a gun battle on the only highway most people will ever take to Penasco was happening?

no!, your crap is tiring totally. Get back on your comupter and do whatever you do. Life goes on outside your compound (mental or otherwise)

What a bitter thing to think, and a disgusting thing to say.
What a bitter thing to think, and a disgusting thing to say.
Bitter? Not a bit,I travel a lot in the coastal areas near Caborca by car, bike, foot and Atv and know how hardball these guys play but usually do not worry to much about it.I still tell my friends ( and they tell me) where the road is dangerous whether it is from construction, weather or gangsters. You have come upon a old forum arguement Tmostinger.Should information of potential problems in Sonora be shared and if at all how much is the question.I think a rolling gun battle ( which it was) headed for a town full of American tourists from the American border might qualify for a heads up.
From what I read they had a head start from the border town police, they just waited for them at a roadblock outside Penasco. the only gun battle was chasing them in the sand when they bailed out of the truck. I personally report bad crimes but I rather let you take the heat for this one.
Perro it had both elements but there was a chase....police and military and the crew all over the road 100 mph plus
I think the Army roadblock should be reinstated outside of town
you don't do "heads up" you do negative sensationalism. Using your theory you should also report any good thing that happens in a Mexican town full of American tourist, but you don't. You are like the guy at Nascar waiting for the car crash who said going in "there's gonna be a crash today , yee haw" it's demented. The rports I got from friends in Sonoyta indicates it was not a "rolling gun battle" oh that sounds so cool and dangerous.....it was a thought out extermination of bad element. Nobody was sad to see the bad guys go. No one is concerned about except you and you want to concern everyone else...... so cool
playaperro, you are correct. We were heading north during this and in going over it with the people in our vehicle and in the other one we were travelling with....we passed by the LP gas place and there was 2 cop cars there and they were looking over what appeared to be broken glass on a door or window of building...we assumed there had been a robbery. There was no shooting etc going on. Before we approached this though, there was a cop car placed just to the south and one again to the north of the area....we don't know for sure but feel that they had the area blocked off during the situation. As we continued north it was about 15 minutes later when all the police force was whipping by us heading south....dont think I am exaggerating when I say 15 plus vehicles....definitly made you aware that something was going on. However, there was no shooting going on between cars as they were not chasing one as we never passed a truck going at a high speed. Definitly the perps had a much head start and were blocked by penasco force and pushed out into the desert. The sonoita force we believe came after the fact. Definitly there was an overkill of police but it does show that they are doing their jobs and are not to be messed with....kind of like all the border patrol vehicles on the usa side.
I think the rolling gun part is from the lp building to desert.....they were blocjed there and forced into parking lot, shooting started there and marines pushed them out the desert, away from the road, so they could take care of things.

Bro this is "the Bad News Thread after all The text I got from a guy crossing over said "rolling F"n" gun battle in Sonoyta! welcome to F"n"Mexico
And by the way you just endorsed death Squads to kill low end workers in the drug war.......Death Squads end up being worse for everyone.legalizing drugs is the answer . Your Own words put you on the side of extra legal murder but hey what is wrong with that? Brother
For clarification purposes, did the chase end at the Miramar beach subdivision by the Mayan or a smaller Ejido Miramar on the Sonoyta / Penasco highway?
Thanks.
How can the environmentally conscious consumer distinguish panga shrimp from trawler shrimp? Is there some place we can go to buy panga shrimp ? And is this a thread hijack?
Need to take a Chill pill it is over and life is good in Mex. I just worry about getting my Turkey down and have my dogs get their picture taken again for the 5th time this year. So much to worry about.
How can the environmentally conscious consumer distinguish panga shrimp from trawler shrimp? Is there some place we can go to buy panga shrimp ? And is this a thread hijack?
The bad news is I don't think it is possible to hijack a thread I started....if you are interested I can message you when they get a big shrimp catch at the fish camp south of Santo Tomas....fresh is better than frozen
Varies on how much you buy.......the idea is buying shrimp without being a party to the damage done by the fleet.Paying a premium makes it worth their time Still it is around RP costs.
Correct. At the Zagas station. Heard that one of the workers had to be hospitalized because of fright !!
Man I don't blame the guy. That's the place with the huge propane tank. I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere near that place with bullets flying. I can't even imagine that tank blowing up.
If everyone lived like you .....nobody would do nothing.

This is a complete laugher! Obviously you don't know Jerry very well or seemingly not at all. Jerry travels the world from Mexico to Europe, AZ to ID, not just the state of Sonora. He is an ultimate DIY guy and on an almost daily basis has a new project going. The difference between, "... there's a lot of bad news out there..." and this incident is the fact that this is SPECIFIC to our BRAND. Please show me the sentence that Jerry talks about safety. Jerry didn't mention anything about not going to Mexico or lack of safety in Mexico. You'll vote? God, I hope not, the Tea Party is ruining America. You'll go do something instead, vs Jerry who never does anything right? Russ is incapable of being OBJECTIVE in regards to news like this because it isn't in his best interest. I would be naive to believe that Russ has voluntarily told one of his sixty guests about the incident and I would be naive to believe that not one of the sixty would like to know more about their surroundings and anything pertaining to their vacation destination, good or bad. Maybe Russ Buss can take them by the "crime scene"? Crime scene tours of Rocky Point, might be a new Niche Russy. An incident occurred and because of Jerry I know that an incident occurred and that's all it is. Public information, that is after all what an internet FORUM is all about, public information, good or bad.
Joe I picture a van load of tequila-upped Touristas taking a cigarette break by the The Zagas gas plant getting torched as the machine gun bullets the Sicarios were firing back toward the highway incinerate the big propane tank. From his hospital room Russ( the only survivor) notes "well this was nothing compared to the Twin Towers"
Note...this thing began in Sonoyta with bad guys on bad guys....one had a police uniform or vest on .Remember the old f250 can be boosted with a screw driver and it is weed season.....leave the pit bull in your truck while drinking..... Me,headed to Tasmania for a month!!!!! This is only bad news if you were waiting across the border to drive your Central American maid back to Scottsdale

Just returned from a month in Tasmania (awesome place) and sad to say my prediction of violence came true. The local lying boosters that knew this was in the cards need to just shut up from now on.My sources hope things are over but have a way different back story to this event. This information does worry me a bit but for now I think we are ok.After the new year more may be coming.

This one too! The story is not being told on the Dec. shoot out and we need to be honest with fellow Mexico lovers.Great work by forum people now if a good reporter starts looking into who really owns what in Puerto Penasco we might have a safer city to have fun in and around.
Long time no chat Jerry, looks like you have kept up intruding reality into the cheerleaders with their heads in the sand. They still don't get that until they stop spending American dollars in Mexico nothing will change.

Jerry,
That report would be a huge bucket of worms that None of the local business owners and politicians would want to be opened.
For those who doubt there are more bad people visiting/living in town, just look at all the $75k SUV's with Mexico plates driving around and
in the parking lots of the resorts on Sandy Beach. (During the warmer months)
Yes, safer would reassure those who are on the fence about visiting RP.

I wouldn't argue with Jerry, he is a SONORAN GOD and thus knows more about the region than you could ever comprehend.
Besides, he's a Commie, Pinko, Ratfink. Roberto asked me to take over while he was gone.
Well I'm Baaaaccck !! I did not leave town because of any percieved danger. I now realize my error in posting two seperate messages together. Again: I did NOT leave Penasco because of any particular, definate percieved danger. Had a disagreement with the girlfriend and decided to get out of town.:(:(:(
Why did I post that message? Because there has been a pattern of events recently. It's the pattern. Clearly to me the discrete probablity of violence in Penasco is historically low. But the recent pattern and series gives us some history that offers the option of computing the conditional probability. Take the coin flip analogy. Probablity of heads is 50% each independent flip BUT if youhave the information that there have been 5 Heads in a row, the conditional probability of a tails is very high. That's the way it works I seriously considered posting something similar about a week or two prior to the big event, but talked myself out of it.
Most of the blather here on the forum is just that, blather. Bar room talk to me. That's ok, people enjoy talking about stuff. I would not do anything to stop the blather. Counting the number of bullets shot, number of vehicles, locations, possible shooters, etc. have not contributed to my guesses. The magnitude of the last, yes is important but I was somewhat alerted prior to that due to the pattern.
The pattern of violence suggest, nay predicts, some changeover in control of one or more of the factions controlling the trade here. That's a circumstance that invariably results in a higher probability of violence. Was the same with Mafia. A disagreement that cannot be resolved does not lead to a court case. They do not call the authorities when something is stolen. They take direct action. Most of the time negotiations keep stuff calm.
There is also sometimes a convergence of bits of information which bits individually don't create alarm, but when there are lots of bits ya gotta pay attention. I'ts ike a smell. We've been having a convergence lately. Jerry pays attention to this stuff as well.
I think if it stays calm here into the first couple of weeks of January. things will keep calm. I figure Navidad is a given holiday for everyone. If someone is pissed off the crap might hit the fan in a couple of weeks of the holidays. If things stay calm I'll be a mello fellow, but in between I'll be on yellow alert personally. Am I leaving Penasco? Maybe but has nothing to do with the violence, might have an opportunity in Kino that's attractive to me.
I would say, if you come down in the next 2 or 3 weeks be more alert than usual. If my kids were coming down, I would ask them to wait. Not stay away forever, but just wait a bit. Am I suggesting you never return to Penasco ? Nope. It's like a spate of bad weather, I'm confident we'll come out the other side in good shape.
