Is anyone interested in developing some updated maps of Rocky Point? I've been going down for 30 years and still have trouble finding places (with rusted street signs and hidden altos :-)
I want to find the seafood processing place, the restaurants, the hardware stores, the medical facilities, the boat ramps...... all the stuff discussed in this forum. Could we collaborate, post and update some kind of mapping - maybe like the old fashioned grid notebooks showing the macro then micro street guides?
It wouldn't have to be fancy at first....sections with text boxes and arrows to points of interest? different layers for restaurants, points of interest, tourist support services....
I think the maps are a good idea for people who have limited time down there. It would help a lot. But everytime I go looking for one place, I see another 2 that I've heard about but didn't know exactly where they were. Me in the car: "Oooohhhhh, that's where ___________ is!!!!!"
Be nice to have an accurate and complete map but there are actually good maps printed in both the RP Times and Join Us. Shows the streets accurately and some locations but the absence of street signs in many parts of town creates a problem. A problem with developing one here is maintaining the accuracy over a time period. Places move and some close and new one open. It's sort of like the signs all over town on closed businesses.
A map would be great,
I was driving down Benito Jauarz 3 weeks ago and about 4-5 blocks south
of the Santa Fe market there is a store with Mexican wood furniture out front.
I stopped by on Friday they have or will make anything wood for you, furniture, kitchen cabinets and doors.
Some nice looking quality stuff and great prices as well.
I asked how long they were at the current location, he said in perfect English 6 years!
I was floored as I drive that part of BJ every trip down.
The name of the place is Fortaleza Del Sol, they have a facebook page with their catalog and recent work.
I will have them qoute my Cholla house kitchen re-model this spring.
If you have any cabinet doors that need touching up he (Santiago) said they can repair
and match pretty much any stain finish combo.
Those guys on Benito are great we have several pieces from them in our barrio house. I would check on the installation of cabinets as it may not be up to your standards. This is purely a heads up. I am a carpenter (in another life) and have had to repair a few installs for friends. Not necessarily installs from these guys but just in general, it is a bit different the way I have seen it done here.
Russ,
Standards, I don't have no stinking standards. LOL.
As long as they do a decent job I will be happy, Yeah they do alot of things differently down here.
I just witnessed my guy force fitting 3 new window frames in rather than opening the space a bit.
Asked him about it and he said I am the window guy. LOL again
They all work and are square and level, I just hope I don't get broken in again anytime soon here in Cholla,
because they will be really tough to remove. In for life.

As a general rule Mexican carpenters seem to view level as a bridge too far.
I may have a map that I drew in Auto cad. The computer I drew it in has crashed an I have not checked to see if I can find a back up copy.
I will check. It is all of PP and Cholla bay area. I had started to do exactly this but did not have enough time to do more than the map.
Now that we are spending a lot more time down there I may be able to finish it .
After looking at the Google I see no reason to finish the one I drew. It is m0difable by any one to correct any errors they see or to ad things not listed.
Ajo Copper News is putting out a very good hard copy map book. It will be free and available at various locations in Ajo, Why and Puerto Penasco. It should be out in a couple weeks and has about 8 pages of maps for Rocky Point and surrounding areas. As I understand it, it will be full color too.
One year, I made screen captures with Google Earth and made notes on them (with landmarks) until I became more familiar with the area.
There are so many side streets and shortcuts you can take to get places.

OMG - do you know my hubby? He has done the same thing, even marked spots on beaches that were favorite "shelling" places.
The Maps from the Ajo Copper News are out. Looks fairly comprehensive and pretty accurate. Lots of side street detail. Hotels and condos are marked but no other bsinesses. Schools, parks, firestations marked. Wonky graphics! Good thing to keep in your vehicle. They will be available at advertiser's locations. Twin Dolphins has them. :):):)
Roberto can you take a picture of the map with your high end digital camera and upload it here?
There are 16 individual pages, with ad's and stuff so a photo won't work well. It is printed in full color and folded like the RP times but printed on heavier paper. These maps break the city into different parts and some overlap and some repeat. The map the Desperado loaded is just as good for a digital version.
Plus there is a copyright infringment notice threatening death and destruction for any unauthorized reproduction.
.........so if we could just find that job in PP. That would work.
Actually, that might just ruin it for us. The idea of leaving the stress of everyday life north of the border is one of the things I love the most.
This is why when we do go we go for as long as possible.
Meanwhile, just waiting for "someday" to come.

Wouldn't ruin it for me at all. I'd love to get out of the NOB mentality. Working in Mexico is not the same as working in the US. Commute? What commute? I'd still have all my fresh food, be able to work, and be able to look at the Sea of Cortes every single day. My evenings and weekends would be fantastic. Quality of life improvement by 1000%.
My comment on her story ...Zip lines in the World Heritage treasure the Pinacates? Well why don't you fly to Paris and take a crap on the Mona Lisa too you peasant?
That story reads a lot like the old Condo Sales brochures! If you are a travel writer you are not expected to write an accurate description of a place, just blow and go.

I like how they always justify the means by adding how great its going to be for the citizens of Rocky Point. Especially when she added the creation of thousands of jobs and I started laughing my fucking ass off LMFAO! This lady apparently doesnt know how its done in Mexico. Yes, there are jobs but no, the people of Rocky Point arent benefiting from that. They bring in the cheap cheap cheap labor from southern Mexico. Fricken Zip Lining in the Pinacates LMFAO and SMH
They will be at all of the Sonoran Resorts sales offices too. (but they have not delivered ours yet. Did you get yours already Bob?)
Jim, there was a lot of rain in Rocky Point the weekend we came down -- it messed up our schedule. We still owe you 10 bundles. Will try to get them to you as soon as possible.
We've dropped off maps at Oxxo stores, Pemex, Circle Ks and numerous stops along the Phoenix-Peñasco corridor.
Mike McCoy and I have tried very hard to make the map complete and accurate. But being human we do make mistakes. Any suggestions/corrections please let us know. We have a Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/AjoMapGeeks
We hope to publish this map each year in November. We want to make next year's map 20 pages adding a more detailed map of the old port and a map of Sonoyta.
Hop David, thats exciting! Can we get an electronic copy to keep on a phone or tablet while driving around?
Jose, interesting idea. The pdf we sent to the printers is 77 megabytes. But maybe we could come up with a smaller file. I'll mention the possibility to Georgina Ross (our ad sales person) and Mike McCoy (my partner in drawing this map).
Here's the overview map, the book itself is awesome - I will have about 25 copies to giveaway Saturday at the Shrimp Park for the Mermaids Market. Stop by and take a look at everything here and pick up a map.
At some point, will there be a copy available to download? This is the the 21st century after all. ;)
Tequila Todd,
One of the issues we have is compensation. Of course we're hoping the maps will be of service. But we're also hoping to make money. Like most folks, I'm a squirrel trying to get a nut.
I have managed to make a pdf that's not too large. But someone with a little skill in Adobe Illustrator can hack into that pdf, take out the ads and edit it in other ways. With a bootleg pdf, it's very easy to make high quality prints.
I have been told it's possible to make an app that's not easily hacked or bootlegged. I am trying to learn how to do that.
Your concern about someone copying parts of your map or hacking an electronic version, and your disclaimer about having a copyright on the material got me to looking and thinking. If you actually drew all those maps, starting out with a blank sheet so to speak, de nuevo, it was a monumental undertaking and I wonder where you got all the required information. Street names, locations, park locations, etc. Everything looks like it is represented as drawn to scale so you had to have some very sophisticated equipment and resources to do that. Hard to believe you actually started from scratch. The only notation of attribution of content I found was on the Sandy Beach portion indicating that it was in part derived from materials provided by the developer.
What other resources did you used, Google maps maybe? Is it possible to copyright material developed by someone else without permission or attribution?
Hop, if someone wants your map outside of the normal pickup places I believe you can sell it using an online warehouse of sorts for pdfs try this link or search for other options like this. We had people come early to get a copy of the map today at Mermaids market. It cost them something to get there so I see no reason why - if someone wanted a Map they would resist a few bucks to get one...

Our first step was buying maps from Palacio Municipal on Benito Juarez south of Fremont. When we purchased the maps from city hall we told them we hoped to draw a street map based on that information, they did not object.
I drove around a lot while Mike furiously took notes. There were some street names on the official city map that did not match the signs. In such a case we went with the signs. When we saw a recognizable landmark (e.g. stoplight, Pemex, etc.) Mike would jot it down in his notebook. When we saw a school, Mike would jot it down. ditto campgrounds, RV parks, motels, etc.
Many of the hotels and resorts are clearly labeled with signs. We gathered promotional materials from various entities to get proposed or hoped for projects. We will continue to do this -- for example we're hoping Mr. Corcoran will help us with doing a map for Laguna Shores. If Rocky Point becomes a home port for cruise lines, we hope those involved will provide us with materials for updating maps, etc.
Mike McCoy and I have invested hundreds of hours in these maps. And hope to invest many more.
