hassled again on my way back into US

We hit the border about 930am yesterday morning with no line at all. Working k9 began to bark at the back of my truck and i knew automatically i was in for a load of BS again. Proceeded to the inspections area and was asked a load of questions. Was taken into the waiting area where the guy at the computer asked me the same crap but then decided to tell me he didnt care if we smoked but only cared if we tried to bring it back over to the states. Inspection agent came back into the waiting area and asked if we smoked (wife was with me). I replied "smoke what" and he said "marijuana". Answered him with a firm no and then he asked if we had anyone else in the car with us or drove anyone around that did "smoke". He then went back and to the truck and came back 20 minutes later and said "you are free to go but please be careful in mexico". They really made it seem like they had found something and were trying to get me to admit to doing something wrong when i had not. I dont know if its me or if its my truck but its almost clockwork that i get inspected on my way back into the states in the summer and they are looking for drugs in my gas tank or under the carriage.

I swear I think they do it to relieve boredom.

Mabe they should spend more time keeping the border wait time updated. Monday it said 5 minutes, 5 lanes open. It was really 1 hour and 3 lanes open at noon... Got as high as 1.5 hours per friends.
ckyevanjay
if they can teach a dog to smell drugs they can teach it to bark on command. just my .02

Agreed... I passed thru Monday around 12:30 and didn't cross until 2:00, only 3 lanes open. Border guy asked "Shouldn't you guys be at work on a Monday?" I just replied that I'm on vacation. I don't think they were prepared, or maybe just don't care about the long lines.

Dang Ben! you must have been pretty close to me as I got to the border about the same time as you. Saw some guy towing a full size pick up with a chain! the pick up was then towing a rhino behind it! glad I got through before him.
ben21
Yeah must have been around the same time... 90 minute wait when the temps are around 110 is not much fun. I wondered aloud to the rest of the people in my car how much it would cost for a police escort to the front of the line.

Stuff a large pillow in your wife's shirt and tell them you have to get to the hospital in the US fast.....
Hooch
I always hide my drugs in my ass, beats a dog everytime.

Hassled again? when were you hassled before and for what?
El Tiburon
Even if I had "smoked" in Mexico I would certainly not admit that to the agents. Sounds like a setup. AZ is one of the few, if not the only, state that considers possession to include what is in your blood supply. It typically takes 30 days or so to clear your system. If you said you had "smoked" a couple of days ago they could take blood and you could be charged with both possession and driving while impaired by drugs.

same nonsense. I get to the agent, hand over my passport, guy asks me 100 questions then tells me to go to the inspection area. 100 more questions about my life and work and what kind of money i make then they send me into the office and waste 25 minuets of my life. This was 3rd time in 2 years. one time they let me stay in my truck while they scoped my gas tank and went through my belongings.

I've been hassled every second time I go. One year I was sent to secondary inspection 10 times in the row. They don't need a dog alert to send you to inspection, at the point of entry you don't have 4th amendment right. One of the times, they powered up my laptop and were looking what I got in there. I was calling them stazi and Nazis and commies. You are not allowed to watch them closely not to video tape them so they can just plant something if they want to get you. Now it happens less because I learned how to respond and say what they like to hear, seems to work so far.

Well you don't have to answer any incriminating questions and always have your laptop password protected.

If you are a citizen then you have 4th amendment rights ALL the time, every time. Its the 'unlawful' part that gets you.

dogs false alert all the time, remind them of that. maybe your truck has that "look" and maybe you should get another one???
jerry
The BP do internal assessments of the dogs reliability. The handler did not want to file a false positive incident report against his hound so he tried to get you to admit drugs had been in your truck or own your cloths from you getting high in Mexico you partying madman you.
AZRob
Stop smoking weed around your truck. LOL You should of told him NO I didnt smoke any why you have some?
Roberto
So if you wanted to really screw with someone you could just rub some weed on their tires when you know they are going to cross ?? Or make some tea and spray it !!

You dirty dog! I like it. LOL
Roberto
You know a really nasty person could go down the line of waiting vehicles with a spray bottle !!??!!! Of course I would not do such a thing the ICE people would be very angry and it's probably illegal as well.:eek::eek:

While you are at it drop a few of those 50 cal empty shells you found on the beach, on the front seat.

Came across on Monday at 3:30, one lane open with one car ahead of me.
Gave our passports and were asked where we came from, where we are going and are we US citizens and what we had to declare.

It took 3 minutes, compared to the 15 minutes we spent going into Mexico to show our dog's papers and the whole Dog ID deal,
the inspectors on the Mexican side seemed to be doing to every 3 cars.

I treat all border agents the same, I Say Good afternoon or Hola, buenas tardes, make sure my seatbelt is used and my sunglasses are off my face
and look them in the eyes and smile. I have never had a problem in hundreds of crossings over the years.
I just cringe when I see people giving the border agents a hard time because it means I will be in line that much longer.
I just keep the attitude in my pocket.

How can you tell it's the people giving the agent a hard time and not vice versa if you're behind them?
brokenwave
Because if the agent was bent on p**sing off people, it would be my turn when I got to the booth.

Life lesson,
Treat people how you would like to be treated and attitudes usually don't happen, (most of the time)
And then there are people who are just plain miserable and being nice to them will not change that.
It has worked for me for many years.

I think they piss people off at random. They are human, after all. Maybe they don't like how someone looks, etc. I'm not saying that none of the people crossing are never at fault but. I never pull up with an attitude - I always say Hello. Sometimes I get a really friendly officer and sometimes I get a huge jerk who acts like he's mad at me because he can't find something to "get" me with.

Agree. That has been my experience as well. I've learned that the same witty response that evokes laughter or at least a smile from most officers will eventually get you pulled over for a "random check" by that one humorless crab (usually a pumped-up newbie) who demands nothing less than somber subservience.

The very definition of the CBP guy that I got last Sunday! At the end of that sentence I would also add, "and the joyful provocation of intimidation."

The last time I entered Mexico I was asked for papers for my dogs and I angrily told them that they were all Mexican(true) to which they apologized and waved me through.

Surprised on the way back there was a Ready Land for people with Passport cards- cut off at least 15 minutes coming into US.

Bad here too, cough, cough, sniffle, sniffle, sort, snort.

Aside from the pollen being bad, the daily thrashing of wind has been making this the worst allergy season EVER. I've never been so miserable. Some years I don't even have allergies! Even aside from allergies, I HATE WIND. Yesterday afternoon on Sandy Beach was pretty miserable with the wind while it was a little cloudy. Once the sun came out not too bad. Unfortunately, my quiet Thursday afternoon on the beach was interrupted by a man in a speedo (YES! A Speedo!!!!!) with chains around his neck who was a talker. When he offered me some of the French brandy he had in his condo I made a hasty exit. And before any of you jokesters ask, NO, I did not throw acid on him!!!!! :p:p:p

LOL, Melissa! I have some stories, too! I can't share the best one here, tho!
