Cartel runs rampid, no law but this American has been jailed for almost 5 months because he brought an unloaded shotgun with sufficient paperwork into Mexico. Served in Iraq and Afghanistan and he's being treated like this. I love Mexico, but Mexico's morals are so F##$ed up it's a joke!

This young adult that I know that works at the Pemex at the Y intersection in Sonoyta found 4 shell casings in the bed of my truck and said that I was really lucky that he saw them for me because he says to get out of that it's $100 per shell casing! I cleaned out the bed of my truck but I guess 4 casings must have been stuck up under my full 33" spare in the bed. I figured shell casings weren't kosher but I didnt actually think that you could be arrested for them! Scared the **** out of me, after that now I do a full sweep of the bed of my truck after we go shooting.

This is part of the paperwork, issued by the Mexican army for a 30.06 I dont understand why the guy would ask a U.S. Customs or Border patrol, if it was legal to take the gun into Mexico, thats like me asking legal advice from Mexican Customs officials about legal matters in the U.S. Mexican Customs has nothing to do with issuing gun permits, only the army. That's a good resource. I was stopped randomly in Penasco about 6 years ago before the locals got to know the big red Titan. Vehicle search turned up 3 of those cheap Chinese throwing knives in the door panel , put there when I moved form NM, and forgotten. Also 2 pocket knives in the compartment between the front seat. One was a Swiss army knife from the factory with my name on it, a gift from a friend. The other was an ordinary small pocket knife. Took us directly to the Municipal court and was immediately adjudicated ( at 2AM ) and fined $40. Did not have the cash on me so the judge ordered me to the jail!! Mexican friend I was with stepped in, got on the phone and rounded up $40, had it brought to the court, paid the fine and left. Money came from the then owner of Babes !!
Anything that appears to be or could be used as a weapon can get you into trouble. A club, anything. My truck does not have auto locks so son rigged up a piece of velcro on the door lock and corresponding piece on the end of a cut off pool cue so I could unlock the passenger door more easily. Works a treat too. Mexican friend saw that and warned me they might call that a weapon !!
Know a guy who is a professional chef that was stopped at the border and told he could not bring his knives across. I have wondered about the fillet knife I take when shore fishing too.
I've told people about the knife thing, most don't believe it. The probability of getting caught is low but the consequences might be huge.

Nope! I did not ask as the threat of jail tipped me over a bit. I'm sure there is someone around with a Swiss Army knife with my name on it !! The throwing knives were a son's who was into collecting that crap at one point, nothing of any real value. Also I wonder about the emergency tool bag I keep in the vehicle. Some sharp objects and heavy blunt ones there !! I have a claw hammer under the seat, maybe I suld worry about that too ! When I hit the road in the van I will have steak knives!! Whoa, now I need to worry about that !! ja ja ja ja. Reminds me of when I had some old fashioned red emergency flares in the kit and a friend pointed out that an uneducated and unsophisticated army guy might think they were dynamite and detain me so I got rid of them !
Awesome thread thus far, great information. I've always felt the same about carrying around tylenol. To a cop in Northern Mexico, advil tylenol could be reason enough to arrest you and I'm sure it has happened. This brings me back to my point though, the country is in shambles with this Drug War and you have lawlessness in many parts of the country and the Mexican government has the nerve to hold this guy for 6 months already and he still hasnt had a trial. Ok, I understand you have to immediately arrest the individual, ok. What I dont understand is the fact that millions of people are not only concealing and carrying but using weapons of high caliber. Let's be honest with ourselves before we defend Mexicos IMMORAL practices of jailing Americans for essentially PETTY crimes, misdemeanors. This case would have been rapped up in about 3 weeks in an American court with a judgement of probation, no jail time. I mean, Jesus Christ, I watch Border Wars on NatGeo and at the end of each segment within the 1 hour show they tell you what the outcome of the arrerst was. Some say charged with but dont say sentence assuming the trial is ongoing, others say probation, SOME SAY RETURNED TO MEXICO NOT PROSECUTED. I mean the fact that we dont prosecute everyone that brings narcotics into the country tells me that OBVIOUSLY even though it is law some discretion is still used by authorities and prosecutors and I guarantee the individual didnt have to wait 6 months for a decision! I understand it is ILLEGAL and that by law they had to AUTO ARREST this guy. I don't think you can argue the fact that Mexico's MORAL COMPASS IS SO F#$KED UP they will never find their way! How would you feel is you got arrested for smoking a joint by an officer smoking a joint?! What a joke, put this on CNN and send in Hillary and this kid is home tomorrow!
on the gas station guy finding casings in the back I would not be to sure they were not planted.I found A 4 10 shell in the back of my truck once after leaving a Pemex in Altar.I luckily needed something in the back after stopping for a pee and spotted it.20 miles down the road at a crossroads the checkpoint seemed really interested in the bed of my truck.Now this might just have been me being paranoid but Altar had a crooked chief at the time.
I originally read about it in Tucson's paper and got the impression it was truly an honest mistake. The guy was unable to turn around with crossing the border. The AP story said he explained his situation as soon as he reached the checkpoint, but evidently the officials aren't about to miss a shakedown opportunity. Note that Mexican officials have asked the family to keep secret the true amount they're paying to get him back.

Good thread..... I have been going to PP for over 25 years and have never heard about the pocket knife issue. I always have a nice folding knife in my pocket. Guess I have been lucky.
Remember that Mexico's legal system considers you guilty until you prove you're innocent not like in the US innocent until proven guilty. If the Ministerio Publico (prosecutor) believes there is evidence against you you can be held without trial for quite awhile. Yo could be allowed to be 'held' in a hotel under some circumstances, if you can pay. Trials are also very different, everything is submitted to the judge in writing with no questioning or oral arguments to develop or clarify information. Under the terms of the Meridia Initiative Mexico has agreed to open up the process and has started training Abogados how to present in court. I read that Sonora has started the process of change. One good thing is that the police have wide disgression, not like in the US. Even without mordita you can often talk your way out of a small jam. I never pay a bite and lately every time I say let's go to court, they say forget it and go away, probably looking for someone that will pay.
