Tix are still avail at the door for $30. Openers at a free show inside Chango's at 3pm and 4pm, sort of a "tailgate" party, along with the Girls of Rocky Point Calendar model signing thing they're doing. Mariachis start at the RCPM show at 6pm, Dead Rock West (twangy country-rock act) at 7pm, RCPM at 8pm until who knows. Probably 12am. More details at http://tucsonscene.com on the calendar section, including Friday and Sunday's schedule.
Btw, Jim, who do you have playing over at the CTC? I'll add it to the calendar.
Sorry to all if I am pimping the bar too much on this site. I just want to get the word out that it is open again. Thursdays we have Akustikos (Mexican and American Rock) and Banda Sinaloence (Traditional Banda Music). Friday is Grupo Norto (Nortena Music). Finally, Saturday is Akustikos again. This is the schedule for now. If anything changes, I will post it. Thanks.
No worries, Jim! Feel free to "pimp" away! This is a great forum to let folks know you are open! Looking forward to meeting you this weekend! Seee you soon! BTW, Jim, do you have wifi @ CTC? Just another way to draw folks in :). How about bfast? Can't wait to check you guys out and best of luck to you!
Show was amazing (and long!) Met some really great peeps! Since this was our first Circus Mexicus, we can't speak to past attendance, but we were right up near the stage for the entire show and it was a fab nite!
New venue seemed okay to us (esp. since we'd not attended anything over at the Sunset in years past) but it was a long walk along the beach to our hotel after the show (actually, we cheated and grabbed a cab about mid-way back!)
Suggestion for next years show: Do it on the beach if at all possible, like maybe at the Reef or one of the resorts if there's room.
As for us, we'll most likely be back next year, but really liked the January Jam @ JJ's over Superbowl Weekend and are hoping to make that a Coleman Family Tradition!
P.S. For an amazing dinner in RP, check out the Blue Marlin in Old Port, just up the road from Lapa Lapa (which has a lovely patio and a nice menu as well!)
The concert was great. At first I wasn't thrilled with the location chage but it was much spacious and you could actually get to the stage for a change. Sunset cantina was great becasue you could go and sit along the ocean in the back parking lot if you needed to get away and relax. My entire goup (13 of us) all were hoarse in the morning from singing along. this was my 10th concert in mexico I think and again it was awesome and worth any penny.
The only thing I didn't like about the location was there were alot of people who just heard there was a concert and showed up. I actually heard some chica arguing over the price of the tickets at the entrance. She showed up after the opening act and was demanding to pay only half price since the show was half over. Peacemaker fans just aren't like that so a few of those people threw the vibe of the place off but after a few shots of smuggled tequila I didn't care!!!!
Show was good. In my opinion I liked it better at Sunset. BUT my opinion is slightly biased as I am very close to Brad(owner of Sunset). We were in the VIP which was located RIGHT next to the stage, which was cool. But for the same price($75) at Sunset, we would get dinner and have a completely open bar. This VIP was beer, margaritas, soda, and water. And you had to purchase food. Good thing I am pregnant, because I don't like beer or margarita's and would have been a little annoyed that I couldn't even BUY something different.
The location, itself, was great, as we have a place at Princesa and could walk over. The sand was a bit hard to walk in but helped with the whole 'beach' feel of the show. I thought they(Larry and crew) were going to lower the price of beer and keep the bathrooms cleaner for this show...at least, that is what I heard. Still $4 beers, and gross, DARK inside J-Johns. Oh well! It was still a total blast!
I'm sitting up at Latitude 31 with Russ Black, one of the event organizers. He's looking over my shoulder to see what y'all have to say about the concert. Because I don't like people reading my shit over my shoulder, I've told him to sign on. If you guys want to earn extra points with me, which are worthless, but points nonetheless...give him a hard time when he gets here!
The show this year outsold the show last year at the Sunset. Paid admission was up 30 percent over last year and the lot that it was held on can accommodate about 10,000 if we decide to push it next year. Pretty much everyone in town reports a good uptick in their sales and even the employees that couldn't get to the show said it was worth it as their tips were a record. The gas stations in Ajo said that they haven't seen traffic like that for over a year. The locals here really love Roger and all he does for the community. Plus the show was great again. If you want more details feel free to email me [email protected] owner of Penasco Recreation Sa de Cv
Later, Russ
Check out last months issue of Mexico Living Guide for a story that Naomi wrote about the Band and Circus Mexicus www.mexicoliving.info Look for the May issue
Hi Guys - Rough estimates over 2500 people there. Drank a bunch of beer for sure, ate a lot of food and listened to some great music. The concert was what Penasco needed to get out of the funk caused by the obviously biased Arizona media. want more info?
My other replys did not get posted yet so I will try one more time. If it post more than once I am sorry!
The concert and the entire weekend was a huge success. More people came this year than last year and the show went off without a hitch. We were up almost 30% from last year. The local economy boom was in the neighborhood of 1.75 to 2.5 million I will have hard stats by the end of the week.
Food sales were strong and beer was sold as well in large quantities. Nobody told me anything bad about the weekend, all numbers are up and the energy in town was palpable. Great weekend! Thank you all who came despite all the bad news in the US press about Mexico. Logical thinking folks thats all it takes.
This is GREAT news and very encouraging, Russ! Very happy to hear it, along with the reports of a big Memorial Day weekend. Seems not everyone is buying into the hoax that Rocky Point is a shithole of drug vampires. Thank goodnes for those who think for themselves and keep their perspective. Let's hope the drug idiots kill each other and attack police stations far away from the state of Sonora. God knows Channel 12 wraps their "reports" up in tabloid level accuracy and fear mongering sensationalism whenever they get wind of anything.
I wish the Mexican govt would pour a ton of money into some really creative American marketing for tourism.
Roger Clyne fans are probably an exception to the rule, Russ. Most are older (not tween Miley Cyrus types or Spring Breakers), fairly well-off, have been following the band for years, have been to Circus Mexicus events (and Mexico) in the past, love Roger and his music and how it relates to Penasco, and would probably follow Roger to the very Gates of Hell if he decided to put on a show there. Count me among them.
I'm glad the numbers were good! Penasco needed it badly. What is a shame is that you won't see a single mention of any of this in the media. Why? It's positive; it's *good* news. It's not drug violence, beheadings, police shootings, swine flu, etc.
I would personally welcome *anyone* from an Arizona major media outlet to accompany me on a trip to Rocky Point. To visit the places I visit, to come fishing with me, to go out to dinner with me, to talk with the locals I interact with, to get the **real story** about Rocky Point, and then publish it as a segment on the evening news or in the paper.
Stuart are you living in Mex or the US? If the US can you post your dare to the networks directly. I can take whoever wants golfing on me at Las Palomas. Eat at one of the many restaurants on the Malecon or 4 star it at sandy beach. I all in on positive promotion (its where i make money for tortillas) I am here in Penasco full time and ready to rock! BTW there were probably 200-250 people at the show for the first time and they were younger according to a non scientific question asked!
M4 Funny you should say something about the Mex Gvt investing. They are going to spend something like 90 million dollars (not pesos) on worldwide advertising campaign for all the hot spots in Mexico and Penasco will be included.

I dare you. Any of you.
:!:Asbo-freakin-lutely Stuart! You are exactly right about the American media - they will only feed off a story they can exploit for fear to grab viewers attentions in the most salacious way. A good news story that is entirely relevant because it contradicts the hysteria isn't one they have the integrity to report. Hell, if they wanted to they could even milk their Fear Fu** and Fiction Fantasy by reporting it from the angle of, "Foolish Americans still flock to Peurto Penasco for good times, music and Margaritas."
I emailed all 4 Phoenix news stations and 3 newspapers to try to get them to send a crew to do a small but different perspectived story when I threw my volleyball event April 4th - even proposed the angle I just mentioned if they wanted in hopes of appealing to their crass oportunistic instincts. Not one bit.

:-):mexico:NICE! That is good to hear. I hope they get an effective company to run the campaign and they are as smart and strategic as possible. Do you have any links to a story/report on this, Russ?

I was standing next to Brad Perry from Channel 3 in VIP. He has been down the past 4 or 5 shows in the VIP section. I don't watch channel 3, I would rather watch paint dry, so I don't know if he ever talks about Penasco or not...it would be nice if he mentioned how SAFE and ENJOYABLE his trip was....
Here is a story my wife did right after the show, its a good one!
They Grabbed Their Passports and Came! Contributed by Penasco Recreation The first weekend in Mexico after the Passport law was to go into affect….What would it hold? Business owners across Mexico were certainly pondering this question. However, for Puerto Penasco the answer is a resounding positive! Weddings, fishing trips and, of course the widely advertised Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers Circus Mexicus concert brought visitors to Penasco en masse! Local business owners were certainly relieved to see that this first weekend in June did not suffer from the Passport issue. Here are a few Monday morning responses about the weekend: “After the dust cleared and the last bag of ice melted.... all I can say is that Rogers Fans are "AWESOME"....I never met so many polite and generous people who were living the life in Mexico....Even when our beer wasn't as cold as it could be, no one complained.....living the life in Mexico....Like I always say..."if you are not living in Mexico you are not Living!" Mike Tobin of Chango’s “I had a wonderful week! The Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers concert brought over 2000 people to enjoy the great music, sand, full moon and fireworks. But there was a fabulous wedding at Las Palomas…my [employees] were busy all week (not just the weekend) and we still have appointments from people who came down for the concert on Monday! Weather was fantastic and the energy in the air is great!” Rita Pizarro of Rita's Spa Services “Yes! It was a great weekend in Rocky Point. And we are happy to report that, Pancho Villa Boat Charters, stayed consistently busy throughout the weekend. We had a group of El Mirage police officers on board for an overnight fishing trip that was an awesome success bringing in one 65lb grouper and five large red snapper. The guys were so excited, that they were planning their second trip as they were loading their trucks to leave… this is the best form of advertising that Rocky Point is very safe, swine flu free, and an awesome vacation destination. There is no denying that the weather has been awesome…Everyone on board went home with a big fish story. They also said that they were going to let everyone in the El Mirage police department know what a great place Rocky Point is for a great vacation.” Captain Ray Ramirez of Pancho Villa Boat Charters “What a weekend we had here in Puerto Penasco! This weekend was a shining testament to what we have here in Mexico… Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers kicked it at Changos. It was an awesome setting as the full moon highlighted the festivities. Roger and the band once again did a great show. Good times were had by all, evidenced by the full house 'till the band finally stopped after several encores. Oh yes, and there were lots of real estate clients down here as well... Investors are really starting to search for their piece of our paradise, realizing that this market has tipped in their favor in a serious way.” Kent B White of Realty Executives
“We had the best weekend in two years!” Maxi at Sonoran Grill
“It’s been great for business…the day before and today after the concert [the Tequila Factory] has been booming with people... This weekend was good for business from the Mirador area to Cholla Bay. Although my employees did not attend the concert, they sure enjoyed the amount of people, work and tips they had. It was a fun weekend all round from clients to workers. Even as I write this, there are three groups of visitors tasting, learning and just having a good time here at the Tequila Factory.” Manny Sanchez of Manny’s Tequila Factory
