We have had heavy rain off and on all night and this morning here in Green Valley.
These thunder showers are moving from east to west at about 5 MPH and it looks like
they could cause some problems in the washes for those heading from or to Tucson.
Right now there doesn't appear to be anything south of Why yet, but it is moving to the
southwest towards Sells and possibly to RP if it holds together that long.
Just a quick update and a heads up.
Happy travels and we'll see ya'll in two weeks....:-P
Yes, it was quite a shock hitting the beginning of the Sonoyta River in San Simon, AZ east of Why. It didn't cause a problem in Sonoyta, but the river was flowing by Pinacate.
We are just heading back from Rocky Point this morning 940am Friday. It has been raining from Sonyota to Ajo. Washes are getting very full. We made it through the detour but we are in a 1 ton pickup. It probably won't be passable for much longer.
Thanks for the updates. This is the only place I have been able to find info on the road/water issue (much appreciated!). Is there an official site or someone to call that has up to date info on weather and road conditions?

I use the follwing site for weather...if you see storms along 85 or along the border heading north, you might have problems with the washes....
I am getting messages that folks are getting through after some delay. Bigger vehicles are having less of a problem. This message is good as of 1:27 Friday afternoon Sept 7
Thanks for the update.... we have a 4wd truck and a car.... sounds like we may need to drive down in the truck if we want to attempt to cross tonight? Is there anyplace open on the US side around 8pm for insurance?

Hi guys, newbie here :-). We just planned a last minute Rocky Point trip this morning - guess we should've checked here first, ugh! Does anyone have an update on this? We are planning to leave Phoenix around 4am tomorrow. I'd like be as prepared as possible and avoid any issues. Thanks for your help!
We're planning to leave Phoenix at around 4am as well... if no new updates about the bridge status are posted we will plan to go the long way around through Yuma...sigh

There's a facebook page called.....Sonoyta detour updates.....that seems to be pretty accurate. One of my Mexican neighbors was on his way to Phx yesterday, caught in traffic and asked one of the engineers working on the bridge how long he thought the delay would be. He said there was no way to tell for sure but his guess was 2 or 3 more days.
The Facebook page has updates from yesterday and today saying it is passable Sonoyta Detour Updates | Facebook I am going to monitor this and the weather for my thursday crossing.
Odd that the storm last night blew through up to the West not the East, an atypical pattern from what I have seen. Bet the Pinacate got a good wetting down. Sky is pretty clear here overhead but cloud cover to the East again. Wettest year in a long time I would guess.
Looks like tonight will be wet and wild again. There are big storm cells building, coming SE from Santo Tomas/Caborca area and South from Baja heading towards RP.
They are about 40 miles out. There is a low pressure system over northern Baja just pumping the moisture north. Wishing some will go through Phx area.
There is a strong El Nino forming this summer so the wet summer should be followed by a much wetter winter. Batten down the hatches! Oh, and build that bridge already!
Wind, bowing dust, clouds and rain most of the day today, Sunday 9/9. 6:15 wind died down, no rain but clouds. The dust was bad considering that we got rain last night !
Today at 1:45 serious washes covered the Coborca road west of Mayan Palace. At that point they were able to be forded by SUVs (a little above hubcab-high water line) -- not cars -- but if more rain comes, that could be another story.
Is it raining again?
Radar weather maps look bad for RP and Sonoyta. It looks like I will wait until next week to come down because
it will be a few days before all the washes are clear.
