These pictures were taken Friday August 10 and Playa Bonita and Sandy beach were pretty busy, then we saw 3 of the cruiser ships all out for sunset and you can tell on the close ups they were pretty full too! Really nice afternoon yesterday along the water. A bit muggy at my house in town but the breeze came up and knocked the heat down a bit.
Saturday morning and the ocean is calm and crystal clear. If you are not here you are missing out. Where ever you are it is probably hot but if you have the Sea of Cortez you can't go wrong
Stop tempting me!!
August is Penasco, Hummm! 92 degrees with an 80 degree dew point, can't do that. Done it many times. I do miss seeing the big storms on the water.
But for me it's only 1 1/2 hours more to Oceanside, CA, where I can stay for free. Penasco will see me in October.
I agree Russ- we came down for a day trip yesterday, and I was surprised it was bearable! It was in the mid-90's with a nice breeze yesterday afternoon (Friday). We were sorry we couldn't stay longer.
About 5pm Friday night sitting on the Terrace and it was comfortable with the breeze. Drink in hand watching the people enjoying pools, beach, sand and sea. Can't get better :) Even El Gato was stretched out on the terrace enjoying himself.
We head down and stay for at least a week every August for my birthday. The heat and humidity can't keep me away, I actually LOVE it. Then back to Phoenix where we shrivel up like dry sponges.

I was in Oceanside/Carlsbad last summer and to me seemed way overcrowded with people. No place to park etc. and etc. The other thing is the ocean feels cold.Nice weather though. Don't get me wrong as I lived in San Diego for many years but as the old saying goes "you can never go home". Staying for free would probably make a difference but the Sea of Cortez is hard to beat.
On our way back from Penasco on Friday night, we got pulled over for secondary inspection- it was our first time ever, and it took about 40 minutes! But there was another family also pulled over from Modesto CA, so we struck up conversation and they said how much they liked Penasco and loved the fact they can swim in the water, but can't in California. But I agree, Southern California does feel nice this time of year.
As Garyd said, Sea of Cortez is hard to beat. And the S.Cali coast this time of the year is so busy in July-Sept. But refreshing.
I spend approx. 40 days in RP and 7-10 in Oceanside per year so I get the best of both worlds.
It was 116 in Phoenix this afternoon. I'd still rather have the view of the Sea of Cortez and a nice walk on the beach in the morning than be stuck indoors all day with no view.
I was in Penasco on Friday and Phoenix today (Sunday), and I would take Penasco- even with the humidity. I forgot how much hotter Phoenix is than Tucson.

I was not stuck indoors this afternoon, I was floating in my pool, and I would still rather have the Sea of Cortez and walk the beach than be in Phoenix any time.
I love the beaches in RP area, you can go a few miles from town and see hardly anyone, great privacy.
Phx in August is hot and sweaty, but RP in August brings on another level in sweating.
I was down 5 years ago in late August we partied at Manny's and Pink Caddy, we left at 2AM it was 93 degrees with 80+ humidity,
so hot and nasty,we were so glad to get into the car for some A/C and the drive to Cholla. Got out and it was really quiet, WTF? no sound of the A/C's running,
Power went out for 2 days and the wind was calm. That was special.
We were there last week for 5 days.....how wonderful! The cool breezes and frequent "dips" kept us comfortable during the day! Wonderful days spent lounging in the hammocks, reading and napping! Can't wait for our next trip down! We LOVE Peñasco in the summer!
A mid-summer, steamy day in Penasco is admittedly brutal. But a little breeze makes all the difference. And at water's edge the breeze is enhanced. Plastic chairs, toes in the water, drink in hand -- as good as it gets.
Yes that's sounds right, the more you use the higher rate you pay....
I'm still confused. How can Russ pay $48 per month for electricity, and Roberto is about $29 per month if I am converting the pesos correctly, and the rental condo is $30 per day for electricity?
They probably don't have the same type of heat load (all that glass) that the condos have....and they conserve.....especially when it comes to opening and closing those big sliding glass doors that you have at condos!!!
Nam and I are very conscience of our electric use because we have a rather large house that has the potential to eat a lot of electricity. We have a very thick house, well insulated only one west facing window-door. We air condition with 2 - 2 ton mini splits 1 up stairs and one down that are very efficient, the lack of ductwork is a huge energy saver - when we leave, the a/c goes off, we set the timers for the a/c to come on 1/2 hour or so before we come home.
I still cant see 30 dollars a day for electric in a condo which is probably 1/2 the size of our house though, sounds like something is amiss

Thanks for the explanation Russ, and thanks for conserving energy not just for your wallet but for our planet!
I kind of wondered if something was amiss, like maybe his meter is off, since I heard they were just replaced.
But then again, everyone hates paying high electricity and so he could be exaggerating a bit of a real problem.

So true about the giant sliding glass doors, and the condo also is an end unit so it has little west facing glass brick windows. And there are two skylights. Great light, but adds heat.
Thank you so much for the link. It was extremely informative. I liked learning that it is because "The rate system has a number of elements designed to make power affordable to even poor families."

My bathroom is bigger than Russes House! Have 20 Ft ceiling with 2 masters bedrooms and real a/c units plus he only has 2 people living there...LOL

We are 2400 square feet 2 stories 10 foot ceilings all around, 5 entrance doors 12 windows - so your bathroom must be huge! That would handle a lot of crap!
My house in Las Conchas is in "Tarifa 1E." For our 4/Jul/12 - 3/Ago/12 billing period we used 788 KWh. The cost was $609 pesos based on:
300 KWh @ $0.549 = $164.70
450 KWh @ $0.698 = $314.10
38 KWh @ $0.900 = $34.2
+ taxes and base charge. Total came to $616.81. I guess the 8 peso reduction to the billing amount was the "apoyo" but it isn't stated on the bill.
The rates in the winter were higher. My 2/Nov/11 - 1/Dic/11 bill for 349 KWh was $705 pesos:
75 KWh @ $0.731
125 KWh @ $1.225
149 KWh @ $2.585
No, I don't know why I generally get monthly bills, when most folks get bi-monthly bills.
FWIW, Austin, TX also charges a higher rate based on higher usage -- and no "apoyo."

So my measurements were off a little anyone can make a mistake...I just wanted to say you need 1 ton for every 350 sq. ft.

To do what? Over cool your house? Give more money to CFE? Our house is comfortable and the a/cs are not over cycling and our energy use is low....I used to be a contractor so I understand the square foot price thing. I think I will go with what I know not on any sales job

Does anyone have those automatic a/c kill switches on doors that shut a/c or heat off when doors or windows are left open? And if so, how have they been? I have seen them advertised in rp times.

I have them on my rental and they are great. If you leave the door or window open for 60 seconds or so it shuts off the a/c unit. Signs on the doors etc. so people know to close the doors

They work great. I had Kelpic install mine almost 3 years ago. They also maintain my air-conditioner system. Sonoran Sea 3 bedroom.

Nic took care of my a/c units when he worked for Kelp. I have continued with him at his new company. He is hard working and honest. Can't recommend him highly enough.

What were his prices like and what did you have him do? Thanks.
When he was with Kelp it was primarily maintenance as others have mentioned. There was a regulator replaced once and the charge for the part and labor was around $70. Recently he had to replace a fan on one of my units. The fan was less than $100 and the labor was around $75. There was a follow up issue and he had to return. He took care of it with no further charge. He has my confidence and trust.
It looks like we've all turned into wusses!! Used to camp...yes...camp...at Playa Bonita for a week at a time during June, July, and August...with no air conditioning...the only "cooling" was to sit (or lie down) in the shade up by the office midday (even take a siesta on the benches), and get that cool breeze blasting thru there....we'd hose down, spread our arms out and get "evaporative cooling"! I'd have my chevy van parked with the big sliding door facing the water...with the back doors open...also getting that breeze blowing thru....
Then you brought that loud assed jet ski down and we needed to shut up the doors so we couldn't hear the "whump Whump Whump!" as you ran that thing in drunken circles at all hours,,,(being invisible to the Monkey on a Jetski is sort of fun!)

We were wusses then we just couldn't afford it, lol. We did what we could afford. When you are raising a family you need to watch cost, now that my kids have grown up I can afford to have air and not have to sleep in a tent at Playa Bonita in July. One time at Playa Bonita my son asked why our trailer was so much cooler inside than our house in Phoenix and I said the trailer has air conditioning.
August 15th 2012 Wednesday. Played 18 holes at Las Palomas this morning, it didnt get hot until the last 3 holes as we had so much cloud cover. It was a great morning of golf. Yes they are aerating the greens right now so we could only play the front 9 twice but it was great! The course is "plush" it will be outstanding in the fall!
