We got news yesterday that Toby (Owner of Camel Toe) died in his home on Friday 4-24. Does anyone have any information? He was in mourning over the loss of Jessica who died over Easter weekend in a roll-over accident.

Wow, I stopped by there about a month ago on a whim and met Toby. What a character he was. He was so happy and full of life. I didn't know him well but I would say that Penasco lost a good one.
OK I have to ask perhaps a dumb question. I've seen signs for Camel Toe off Calle 13 I believe. However I've never been by it. Is it a bar? A strip club??

Asking if the Camel Toe is a strip club isn't a dumb question, given the name of the place. It was actually a well done bar, and had it not been for the lack of tourism, it may have done well. Everytime we went by, not often, it had one or two cars in front. It's all very tragic. :|
Camel Toe will not reopen. The owner of the property contacted me today to list it for rent for him. I guess someone could actually reopen it using the same name if they wanted to. He is asking $1000 per month. It is 9000+ square feet. It would be cool if it stayed the same but time will tell. When I went there today there were black ribbons on the doors.
The liquor license belonged to Tecate. It is common for Tecate to provide the tables, chairs, equipment, signage and the liquor license. I don't know if Toby was trying to get his own but he was operating under theirs at the time.
Well, Camel Toe Cantina rented today. They want to keep the same name. Any comments? Also they were wondering if anyone has a picture of Toby so they can make a kind of memorial space for him. I think they knew him. If so, please send them to me. These guys seem cool and I think that they will do a good job.

There are some photos of him on the website as well as his bio in the about us section. They might try to lift a couple from http://www.cameltoecantina.com/. I didn't know him well but spent several afternoons at the 'toe with both he and Yesicka, good people with a sad ending.
My 2 cents: very cool little bar with some good thought put into the atmosphere of an outdoor flavored cantina; nice place. I met Toby once and he seemed like a nice fellow. It was sad that all this economic/fear garbage took place so close the opening of his bar - it obviously meant a lot to him, and I felt bad for the downturn in business his place was suffering; he seemed to take it hard.
Having said that and with no disrespect meant to the man, I would really like to see the name changed to something less..... juvenile and off color. I think Toby was going for something fun and a little mischevious - I can appreciate that and think that IS possible with some more creativity. I mean, naming a bar after female genitaila..... really? Come on, man.
Again, no meanness meant towards poor Toby, God rest his soul. I just hated the dumb name from the start.
He could call it the Vagina Stone Bar and Grille and I'll rent him the stone for viewing !!!!! We'll make a shrine and people can treat it like the Blarney Stone !!

OK, I'll come clean. Myself and 2 partners have re-opened it. It did not make sense to change the name: it is already known, it is unforgetable, it is Tobys legacy, and of course the sign and paintjob were already taken care of. We have been open for 2 days and are mostly trying to organize. Wednesday is the Grand Re-Opening with live music and food and drink specials. We are having 2 pool tables delivered tomorrow. God knows I haven't been making any money in the Real Estate business. Anyway, wish me luck. BTW always $1.50 domestic bottled beer.

And, I know this sounds stupid, but can't always tell when a bar in Mexico calls something an import/domestic--you mean Tecate products (assuming you're sticking with Tacate, as it was before) are all $1.50, including Dos XX, Bohemia, etc?
Gringo, Yes, we are in Mexico so an import is an American beer and a Domestic is a Mexican Beer. We did stay with Tecate for both the ease of the transition and the popularity of their products. Beachgirl, It is on B. Elias Calles (the dirt road that goes from Calle 13 to Playa Bonita) up a block and a half on the right. I will probably be there more during the days and early evenings. I will leave the late nights to my partners. I don't want a divorce. Obviously we couldn't get Tobys old URL so went with www.cameltoecantina.net. Any suggestions are very welcome. Thanks all.

That would be fabulous. We are not sure what kind of turnout we will have given the current slowdown and the lack of time to promote much. We hope for the best and it will be fun regardless. (The Tecate girls will be there...) There will be some killer seviche and snacks. (and my wife makes the worlds best salsa) I think the 1st band starts at 8:00. We expect a late night as the last 2 nights there were more people at 2:00am than at 8:00pm. Open til 3:00 (thankfully thats not my shift). If you have any ideas or can help with some last minute promotion, I would be eternally greatful. Jim

We can't afford a lesbian bartender right now so us guys will have to do. WiFi and Majic Jack will be up next week. Shrimp coctails are on the menu. As far as a message board, the website has a chat feature and a blog feature that I have not enabled as I am not that computer savy. Maybe I will figure it out later. Umm, maybe he meant a message board, like, an actual board you physically attach a paper message to, kinda' like they've had for years at JJ's. Funny, though, the online message board is what I thought he meant initially as well. I think a link back to this site would suffice for that function, but a good old-fashioned board hanging on the wall always gives a bar a personal, local feel, in my opinion. As does a wall of photos with prior bar patrons--you'll need a printer for that these days!

I just got in from the bar. Not to drunk to drive but I probably wouldn't in the States. Not too many people at a time but they came and went. I sat with one table of about 10 for a couple hours. One brought a guitar in from his car and played and sang and some danced. It was a good time. I need to put a cot in the office. Oh, beads...welcome, Black Widow...NOT. Have to get up at 6 to take the kids to school.
Well... Sorry but a bit of a mixup. There was a scheduling problem with the bands. We have now changed to Thursday. There will be a mariachi band (Hermanos Duran) playing for a couple hours starting at 6:00pm and then a Mexican version of popular songs band (Akustikos) will play from 9:00 until whenever. We will have seviche, chips and homemade salsa (my wife's) and popcorn. I hope you can make it, the nights are absolutely perfect right now. Thanks.

Right now all 3 of us are kind of in and out most all the time. We haven't figured out acutal hours yet but I try to head home by 10:00 or so as I get up at 6:00 to get the kids off to school. I assume Thursday will be a late one though. It should be fun but I don't look forward to Friday morning.
