Just found out about this while sitting at a stoplight, some old dude came up from behind me and scared the BeeGee's outta me when he handed me the business card for this place.... I Love Gyro's... this could become life threatening if they're good...
and they have Baklava for dessert....
They're located in Plaza La Marina across the street from Hotel Penasco Del Sol.... Will report when I return...
Oh this is going to be dangerous.... Barb and I both ordered the Gyro Combo Special (gyro, fries and drink)... and unbelievable for as picky of an eater Barb is, she ate the whole thing, in the same amount of time it took me to eat two... OOOOMMPA!!!
For our 2 Gyro Combo Specials and 1 extra Gyro the bill was $20. and the Gyros are BIG... I'm just a Pig when it comes to Gyros...
The place on the inside is very clean and very basic except for the Marlin hanging on the wall above the entry to the kitchen (Louie loves to fish)... "Louie Xourafas" the owner is a real joy to chat with... he waits the tables wearing his little El Greco's uniform (matching light blue hat & polo shirt with a white apron)
They are located directly below the Sunset Cantina... He's only been open for 12 days now so.... Please, stop in and say Hi... give Louie's Gyros a try... and tell him Mark & Barb sent ya
He's just been getting locals so far, not much tourist traffic as yet and not much action from Spring Breakers.... I was totally pleased and enjoyed the Gyros very much.... I'll be doing my best to keep him in business...
Sounds good. Please work hard to keep him open until at least late April / early May! I'm holding you & Barb responsible. Then we'll do our part when we get there!
Never thought I would look forward to going to Penasco to eat a Gyro. But I guess any reason is a good reason.. Atleast that is the reason I will give the wife
We stopped by Max's for Breakfeast on Friday and made it a point to come back for a Gyro in the afternoon.. You are right Mark this is the Best Gyro in Rocky Point.. Actually it was probably one of the best Gyros I have had in a long time.. Just wish they put the Feta on the sandwich and not as a side for an extra 3 bucks.
Rob... I get a Gyro and a Greek salad and take some of the Feta from the salad and put it on the Gyro... the salads by the way are great too... Hey it's Monday... that means it's Greek night at our place... yummie..!
Think I'm gonna spload... just had a Gyro, Greek Salad and Stuffed Grape Leaves... then Louie came out and gave us extra Stuffed Grape Leaves and French Fries... Great Stuff...
Tonight, Louie's wife Kim told us that they will cook a Special Sunday Lamb Dinner for you with all the fixings for around $10 per person... but you must call in your order in advance by Saturday (four person minimum order)
Bandit's Lamb - Arnaki Kleftiko - Greek Recipe
Bandits Lamb....good recipe but without an earth/clay oven you just can't cook lamb or Goat right.... The word Kleptomaniac came from 15th century Greeks hiding out from the Ottaman Empires tax men in the Mountains and stealing everything they needed including lambs for sunday clay oven cooking. Klepht - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Greeks have always dodged paying taxes..it is why they are in the mess they are in today

And you have first hand knowledge that "...they have always dodged paying taxes...." :stir:
We finally got a chance to try El Greco, and it was great! Like someone said, it was better than most Gyro places in the states. Louie was fun to talk with, and the gyros with 70% beef/30% lamb were well worth the $5. I told them to definitely be in Taste of Penasco next year so people can know about them- they asked how we found out about El Greco and I told them Mark wrote up a review (they said you've become a regular!). They will be closed from 7/10 until some time in September, so I recommend you go soon.
Interesting day... I met with the guys from the wheelchair basketball team at the community center... Barb, Laura and I had a productive meeting with Blanca the director of the center... from there we went for lunch, and it's Monday so you know what that means... GYROS at El Greco's and while there Louie had the people from Sam's Club in to talk about maybe ordering his products through Sam's Club...
Well, I took that opportunity to introduce myself to the Sam's Club people and I asked them if they had a program to help out the disabled and the wheelchair basketball team in particular... the gentleman I was talking with gave me the name of who to contact and then he mentioned that they also like to help out the schools...
HELLO!!! I immediately gave him one of our Adopt-A-Classroom cards and there just happened to be a Rocky Point Times there for me to show him the article about us in the RPTimes (Thanks Sandra)... the gentleman was very interested and asked if he could keep the RPTimes to show to the district manager and he also insisted that I go to Sam's Club to talk to the District Manager in person...
YES... a very productive and positive day... Just goes to show you that Good Things Happen to those who eat at El Greco's Gyros...
Okay Mark, for sure we are going with you guys next Monday!!! Now that I've seen the pictures, it makes me want one even more ........(as her tummy growls!!) And congrats on your day - looks like you were definitely in the right place at the right time (apparently, there is no wrong time to be at El Greco's though!):)
Great job Mark. And I want to congratulate you and Barb on that fantastic article in the Rocky Point Times. It was not only about the adopt-a-classroom, but it was also about the tireless, hard work that you both do for the community. The title of the article is: "If You Think Good People are Hard to Find, Meet Mark and Barb Olszewski!" And what follows is one page detailing the various charities they have helped. Way to go!
Thank you Heidi... but I need to correct one thing you said... It's not work, I hate work, but we enjoy doing what we do, if it was work I wouldn't be doing it... Again Thank You... :D
Thanks Heidi... I'm meeting the other members of Los Rolling Rockies at Sam's Club so we can talk to them about possibly getting donations and or sponsorship...
Here We Go Rolling Rockies, Here We Go... there I go cheerleading again...
Really Bummed out today. Well, there is good news and bad news. El Greco was supposed to open again today so I stopped by for my Gyro fix only to find that the place looks different and had a Closed sign in the door. I talked to the folks inside and they told me that Louie had sold it to them. They also said that they would not be open until around November 1st. (that's all the bad news). The good news is that they will still have the wonderfully delicious gyros that I am craving even more now than I did before I found these things out. I guess that good things will come to those who wait.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/15/dining/15gyro.html?pagewanted=all We all may be eating less meat next year as the drought related feed crisis in the Midwest is putting people out of pork production left and right. There just is very little corn available...this is scary

Buy as much as you can as the prices drop due to ranchers thinning heards in order to be able to feed the ones they keep. Then freeze it and enjoy as you watch the prices climb.
Then on the other hand, who needs meat? It doesnt get much better than rice, beans, tortillas, guac and pico with margaritas at Del Capitan. (I specify Del Capitan because of the quality of margaritas and the view.)
New Location and great Gyro's which I was never a fan of but these were very good...nice change from an overload of Carne Asada. On the corner of the road where the majority of the ATV rental guys are located, same road that goes to Laos Mar and Playa Bonita.
Drove by the gyro place today and saw a sing saying that they will be open on October 10th. They were only closed for the summer.one more week can't wait!!!!!!!!!!
