Heard recently that the convention center's location has been moved from the old air port area on the main highway to the area near the Arches in Sandy Beach and is suppose to be breaking ground this week. DH and I took a drive this morning and there were a couple of guys with surveying equipment in the general area. They were not surveying the road but appeared to be surveying land between the dirt road looking south.
There was a rumor that there was an effort to move it to the large parking area between the Del Sol Hotel and the harbor. The large lot where they have had special events set up. Great location to help the Hotel. Have not heard about the other.

Well and add to the fact that having a convention center close to where the density of rooms is makes more sense than having to drive 5 miles + to attend your daily convention. Convention centers outside of the Hotel area do not do well. Being able to shuttle delegates to and from the resort properties to a center that is constructed on the same piece of property makes way more sense. IMHO
my guess...epic FAIL ....A Convention center in a town with bad air service and border issues plus Foxs News scaring the crap out of the Geezers (Jack you have to hold the rabbit ears and stand on one foot to tune in to the fear fiesta)
The only hope it's designed for multi uses
has low initial costs
focuses on the Mexican market.....man a light rail to Hermosillo would be the ticket
Decades ago I used to take the train back and forth from Mexicalli - and we used to go to the depot at midnight to buy tacos (only place serving food at that time of night). Also caught the train in Penasco to head to Mexico City - and Louisa & family used to take it back and forth to Caborca all the time.

Now don't get in a huff Russ, it's a great painting.
Actually Kenny, I don't know if you ever did the train ride from Williams to the Grand Canyon or not, but they stage a train robbery on the way back.
I took my sister-in-law and brother-in-law up and back on it and they are shall we say, simple folks who didn't have a clue what was going on.
I think she might have wet herself when the pair came in with their guns and all. I laughed until I almost did the same. It was a really fun trip all around.

That picture reminds me of it.
Ha, it reminds me of back in the day when Knox Berry Farm was free, and the big attraction was the train robbery.
Today we've been watching trucks full of dirt coming from Choya Bay direction heading towards where the Convention Center is suppose to be. Then doing a turn around for another load of dirt. Maybe they are killing two birds with one stone - dredging a marina/port area and providing fill for the Convention Center? Maybe someone has a better idea?
A little birdy tells me something interesting about the cruise liners and home port.... There goes the race track Russ!
Well that is all fine and good, the race track already has plans to be moved if and when the home port uses the marina. It will still be in the Sandy Beach area but I dont see anything happening for a while. Things are shaping up down here folks, its been long enough and I think there will be more than a few changes in the next 12 months. Pom Pom away
Sure would be nice if the city made the builders provid a completion bond instead of having all of the unfinished projects that look so bad. It would also stop the bad raps on RP about the Condo rip offs.
Drove by where we believe the Convention Center is being built today - Dec 26. There were several trucks and some men - mounds of dirt - stakes with flags and a large smoth area (where the stakes were). Most definately a large area. So something has started.
Haven't seen any activity at Esmeralda (except for cranes being in different positions upon occasion) or at Casa Blanca - but gates seems open and more cars parked there.
Hope everyone had a Great Christmas and that the New Year is going to bring an economic upswing to Penasco for everyone.

I remember someone else mentioning that the cranes arms have moved etc... The S.O.P., maintenance of cranes like that would call for the arms to move, and the steel rope to be serviced as well. There a very expensive piece of equipment, and if they don't want them to become inoperable because of the salt, they had better be doing it.
That unfinished project East Of Playa Encanto is Playa Azull? About 5 stories of concrete. There are two finished units on the first floor West end. All lighted up, painted with blinds in place and sone guy sitting on his balcony. We seen it when we were out on a quad ride.

I talked to an American lady with some kids who were using the house a while back. She acted as if everything was just fine and had no observations to make about the rest of the project. It seemed a bit surreal at the time.
