that I might be in for it the other day when I ordered iced tea at Capone's (my first visit) and they told me that there would be a wait while they brewed it. So I thought I'd get something simple, the Shrimp basket. It comes with 2 choices, and curly fries seemed like a simple choice, at least they wouldn't have to "brew" those. The shrimp and fries came in a basket all right, but it should have been called a grease basket, not a shrimp basket. The fries and the shrimp were the same color, a dark dirty old grease dark brown, and I could have wrung out the fries like a dirty wash rag as they were all stuck together in a gooey grease ball in the bottom of the basket. The shrimp was over cooked, and a ugly dark brown, the color of dirty grease. At one point the waitress came by and asked how our dinner was, so I picked up a dark gooey ball of curly fries and told here that they were very greasy, and as she could see "all stuck together". She just gave me a dismissing hand jester as she turned away saying, "Oh, those are just curly fries... I didn't notice till later that steamer clams were on the menu until I saw them being brought out to a nearby table. I should have ordered those, at least they wouldn't have been in a dirty grease ball.
When they started out the food was so good. The help was helpfull. The prices were reasonable. Now the food sucks, the help is no help and the prices are thru the roof. $20 for a large pizza??? I think this is one of the reasons people have stopped coming here. Greedy resturants and hotels make it cheeper for a family to go on vacation to San Diego than to come here.

Uh..Oh Kenny...you're going to catch it now from the Capone's "lovers"....... I think everyone that's a regular on here knows my feeling about Capones....if I want to go to a "Scottsdale yuppie OVERPRICED sports bar"....I'll go to Scottsdale!!!! At least I probably won't be verbally abused by one of the owners....
BUT....
I went in on a previous trip down (about a month ago)...only because I wanted to get together with a friend who is a regular....that is the ONLY reason I will ever enter the doors.....I ordered the blackened grouper...although it was my first time eating grouper...it was delicious....and it was reasonably priced.......the service was ok.....but SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWW!!!!!
On the prices....I'm finiding that many of the places in Penasco have raised theirs to the level of the US....I was in Ramons (the original one)....and found those prices to be higher then I remembered, and no "all the fried fish you can eat" on the menu.....
Kenny, have you tried Long John Silvers. They are run specials, and you could of saved all that gas money too.
On a good point at least you intestinal track got cleaned out.
Chari...didn't see it on the menu at all.....and the pricing looked to be a bit higher then when I was there before....still good food, though! My daughter could have had an entire meal just on their salsa and chips!!!

Kenny, you knew you just wanted to impress your girlfriend, so many other choices of real Mexico experience you choose the one that is far away from Mexico's traditions, next time go to Sapporo, next door, the food is really good and the freshly squeeze lemonade is to die for, but you must specify "freshly squeeze" otherwise you get the machine made one!!
I probably was at Sapporo enjoying my freshly made dinner, couple of shots of Corralejo Reposado and lots of lemonade!! while you were having your stomach pumped by ~~~Happy's Sewer Cleaner and Food Delivery Service~~~
Sorry to hear about the bad meal, Kenny. I'm not going to try to defend Capone's on it. I have had many good meals there, but like you, the prices are getting totally off the hook. I've always liked it for the convenience factor, being right next to Playa Inn. Staggering distance after a long, hot day on the water. But a pizza is just a pizza and theirs have gotten very pricey.
I prefer to go to La Curva (don't start, Happy) and have them cook my fresh fish for me. They do a great job and no big balls of grease.
Speaking of fish frys, does Black Dog still have the all-you-can-eat Fish Fry on Friday nights? They used to do an outstanding job with their fried fish. All you can eat was seldom an issue, because the huge flounder fillets they served filled the plate. Rare occasion that I'd order a 2nd round. I stopped going there once they put in the slot machines, but may consider going back if they still don't have the mini-casino.
Ramons has been having the dirty grease problem the last few trips so we went to Capones instead. Their oil hasn't been dirty that I know of and their fish is of better quality than Ramons. They have never had fish and chips on the menu at Ramon's since I've been going but they always served them.
Ink, we went to the lighthouse the first night. It might not be all that "traditional", but it's a good choice if you want a view and a pleasant experience, and never a bad meal. I finally tried the bacon wrapped Shrimp there, and it was good for a change, but the bacon over rides the taste of the shrimp. I'm no tourist Ink, so we did eat lunch at a stand in Cholla one day, and another the next. As far as me eating at Capon's, I held out longer than the rest of ya.:har:
Oh, I'm not a fussy eater and don't complain much. The waitress did ask how it was though, but obviously she didn't really care... I just thought I'd pass it on to who ever might be interested.

I hope you tried the Habanero/mango fish plate, in my opinion the best so far!!! and of course once you add the view at sunset anyhting else is just........specially if you are in the company of your other half!! a couple of glasses of wine a few more drinks, watch the sunset, a little kiss here and there and what a wonderfull experience............sigh!!!
In regards to the bacon wrap shrimp, I do have to agree, many times I found that it depends on how much they fried it, one of the reasons I liked Balboa's so much, it was very tasty, it seems that they finish the cooking procees of the whole thing when they sautee it in the "empapelado" with the white wine, you can even taste the cheese, the shrimp and the bacon separate but in the same bite, if you know what I mean, I guess you just have to go and ordered next time!!
PS: there was not use of spell check in the creation of this post and no animals were harmed other than the shrimp, pork and cow to create a wonderful meal!!
I guess the "sautee" term is not the right one, probably be best to discribe it as "sudado", as we say it in my country, literally will translate to "sweated" where in reality what happens is that the food will absorbe the flavors of the spices and condiments added to the wrap/empapelado and, of course, the process is different than sauteeing it too.
At the end it does not matter the food is still finger licking good!!
OH!! almost forgot agreed with dm, ramon's does not have the fish fry in the menu but will make it for you or your party of fifty if it is ordered, I think he does advertise it in the little drink menus holders on the tables on Fridays!! however you can ordered any day of the week and I have come to the conclussion that the breaded is better than the grilled fish!!
I don't go to Capones very often, but went Thursday night with a group of eight. It was horrible. The glasses of water were obviously from the tap and tasted bad. The diet coke that three ordered was flat. The "marinara" sauce on the pizza and my meatball wrap was basically tomato sauce out of a can. My bill for a meatball wrap (which was overcooked), dinner salad, and diet coke was 180 pesos. The onions rings were wonderful and we had a great waitress. Won't be going back except maybe for a beef and onion rings.
I have been in the food and beverage business pretty much all my life. I'm not that picky when it comes to food because I know how hard it is to please people. But there are certain foods that one should just not screw up..............and one of them is shrimp. Well, Ramons did just that for me. I ordered the shrimp in garlic and was so disappointed that I'm still bitching about it (my husband can verify this) and that was in February. Bruce had tacos which were very good, but I just can't get past the shrimp, so I probably will not eat there again. (I do believe in giving places a second chance though, but there are so many other restaurants that I want to try and I really don't want to spend my money there again just to see if they can get it right the second time.)
Hmmmm, unprepared to serve ice tea, grey 'fried' foods, sounds like a supply chain shortage! Actually, the fryer wasn't hot enough. Next time, storm into the kitchen and force the cookie to eat them all. Then, watch him/her eat them and have'm cook up a new batch in front of you! har har!
