Child with hearing loss needs surgery....

I decided to start another thread on the topic, so that people would not have to wade thru 7-8 pages of posts to get the needed information.....

Jimena, whose grandmother is Lorena (used to work at the old Margaritavilla and Coyote Ugly) is about 2 1/2 yrs. old and is deaf. The family is very poor and could not afford to get her diagnosed for the cause. Some money was raised by members of this Forum, and Bill (lagrimas85) and his wife Fabiola took her to San Luis to get tested. It appears that with some device and eventually surgery (sounds like cochlear surgery), she will be able to hear. Both the device and the surgery is very expensive. Ways are being explored to get what the little girl needs, both thru charitable foundations, and fund raising

To get the full story as background, read this thread....

http://www.rockypointtalk.net/showthread.php?2923-Child-with-hearing-loss-needs-diagnosis...

I will post some pictures here, and one of the last posts made on the other thread which is the info on the diagnosis.

One of the last posts in the old thread....

Some more info....heard from Bill (lagrimas85), and from his description, the girl may need cochlear implants (or something like that). The cost for the devices is about 15,900 pesos as Mark mentioned, and the surgery in Mexico would run about $40-50K USD. I think they need to see if the group from Tucson that Mark mentioned before(Manos de Ayuda clinic) will be able to take care of the surgery and implants since the girl now has a diagnosis. I'm attaching some photos that Bill took of the little girl, Jimena, and here mom, Maria.

Mark...I'm good for another $100 US for any fundraising.

Thanks again to Bill and his wife Fabiola.....his "suspension" from the Forum should be over pretty soon....

I'm attaching his email:
Joe, we are back in RP. We had a nice trip, I called some friends of ours in San Luis when we arrived there and they told us to stay with them, so no hotel bill and then they fed us while we were there. There is good news and bad news about Jimena, the good news is that with an operation she will be able to hear and lead a normal life, for now she needs an apparatus installed ( the nerve or nerves in her ears are dead) to stimulate the nerve for one year before they can operate, Joe this device at a big discount is 15,900.00 pesos, the operation involves an implant that transmits sounds to the inner ear and in Mexico is 40,000.00 to 50,000.00 dollars. Joe the little girl and her mother are precious and need to be helped. We talked to Blanca this evening about the situation and is going to see what she can do. The charge for the specialist to come from Mexicali this morning and for the anestisiologist was 5000.00 pesos if you could let everyone that donated know. If also you could seek some donations to Mark for the apparatus. All in all it was a really nice trip through El Golfo and the farms around San Luis. We had a block plant there 17 years ago and it was nice to go back. Joe I will try to send you some pictures of Jimena if I can. Bill

Mark and Barb,

If there are people like me that want to donate but may not be traveling to RP soon or all they can afford is 5-10-20 bucks... is it ok to donate on your adopte a classroom Paypal account http://www.rockypointclassroom.com/donate.html ????? I think there is a place to describe items on the paypal ???? So the donation goes to the little girls medical bills..... :-)

I am not sure about other people but if I can just click click click a few times and I made a donation it "happens" instead of I will give a donation sometime later after I figure out how to do that or travel back to RP sometime in the future and hand delivery it.

When Chari posted I got $50 to donate ! Chances are Chari will hand delivery the donation to mark and barb's House... But what about the rest of us ?

Mark and Barb please share the options for making donations for this little girl or other great causes you two have going :-)

Hey Rob....I may just have to be a "pigeon cooper" for Spring Break!!!!

For those of you who have the same problem like me....can't remember names....here's a face to go with the name....the lady on the left of the photo is Lorena, the little girl's grandmother. On her right is Suzie. They both used to work at the old Margaritavilla (when Marty owned it).

Joe, I also explained to her it wasn't just us, that it was you, Mark, Az Rob, Ladyjeeper,I saw something from Joester, Blanca, the Perez family in San Luis, Dr. Jose and the doctor that drove from Mexicali to San Luis to do the testing. I know others helped but I dont know who you are if you could post here I will forward the info to the mother. Meanwhile we need 15,900.00 pesos buy the apparatus she needs before they can do the implant, the nerves in the babies ears are dead and need to be stimulated for approximatly 1 year. We were told this was urgent. Please contact seadweller with any donations. Thanks
rockyptjoe
For anyone that missed it, Mark (Seadweller) has made arrangements for contributions to be tax deductible....this is legit!!! Just contact him on his email (or PM) here, and he'll give you the details.

His email again is [email protected]

If you don't want to go thru that process, and have a small donation you want to make, you can use paypal on the website Mark and Barb have at:
http://www.rockypointclassroom.com/donate.html There is a location on there that you can indicate that the donation is for Jimena.

Mark, I am going to send my donation down with my friend Kathy and Dave. They will get with you this weekend to give it to you......They will be there Thurs. thru Mon....O mean Thursday the 17th thru Monday.

I'm still shooting for coming down the same weekend (President's Day)....I contacted Maria about getting some photos of her and Jimena so that I can get a poster made up....maybe some of the local businesses will be willing to put it up....I'm sure that Jose and the BooBar will.....he knows Lorena (the grandmother) from way back!!! According to Russ, the local Alphagraphics is pretty reasonable....and his son is a great poster layout designer, as well as website designer!

At an exchange of 12 pesos to the dollar, it should be about $1325 that needs to be raised for the device that Jimena needs before her surgery. Maybe Mark can update the site occasionally on how much has come in???? And Mark, don't throw away any empty pickle jars!!!

Joe I can save jalapeno jars too, since Harold brings me one of those huge jars of sliced jalapenos just about evey other week... I seem to have an addiction to them and eat them by the bowl full like they were Cheerios...

You're welcome, Mark. Anything for the children....

Mark, I'm busting my brain trying to think of a money raising venture. If we had access to our house, we could raffle off a week there...how about raffling off a boat trip to bird island? As long as you covered fuel? Does anybody have any special skills or talents they could barter for? (all you gutter minds pipe down, this is serious bidnez!!) Chari and Happy, would your artist donate a painting - someone could commission their spouse or kid or dog if they won the raffle...:think::think::think:
rockyptjoe
Sheryl....some great ideas....I'm heading down there tomorrow, and I'll be stopping by Mark's to chat.

If there was a boat trip raffle, the normal charter costs would have to be covered.....I wonder what the Pacifica (96 ft. yacht) runs for a day trip out to Bird Island? Raffling that off, with the winner being able to take up to 6-10 of their closest friends.....

At about $100 per ticket.....if we could sell 100 tickets ($10,000)....that would easily cover the device Jimena needs before the surgery, and any expenses getting to the doctor, etc. Even 50 tickets might cover it.....

Expanding that even further, if you keep it to 100 tickets....you could possibly have a second prize....a week stay in a condo.....and still cover the rental cost of the condo. There may be someone on here that has a condo available at a reasonable weekly rate..... So the probability would be 1 out of 50 of winning.....better odds that the lotteries!!!

Joe the Pacifica is going to be out of the water soon for bottom work, so that won't be an option... (I've already thought of that)... I can check into a fishing trip aboard the About Time (the cost is $600. to $800. depending on the distance, but maybe I can get it for the fuel cost)...

I'm thinking of auctioning off one of my gold capped great white shark teeth on eBay and adding what I get for it to the cause they usually sell for around $300. to $400. depending on the amount of gold involved...

Mark, Joe, Fabiola talked to Blanca this afternoon and was told if we can get some clear copies of the results from the trip to San Luis she will forward them to Manos De Ayuda in Tucson. There is a good chance Manos DE Ayuda will give us the device at a huge discount or possibly even free. My email with the results looks good, Mark can I email you these and see if they are clear enough for Blanca to forward to Tucson?

This is great news... Blanca told me this Sunday morning at breakfast... I have also been talking with Patricio & his wife from "Manos de Ayuda", they have a door for a house that is being built in the barrio San Rapheal and they also have a cement mixer to donate to the community center (to use when we build homes), but like always we need transportation from Tucson...

Bill... I think I have the email you sent but please send it again... if I remember the size of the photos was really big and when I shrunk it it wasn't as clear... Bill... Can you print or copy the originals???

Bill....trying to avoid the "pat on the back" some of this things can become...but all I did was to stir the pot a bit....I guess I have the rep for that on here. There are several people who have worked very hard on the matter, some quietly in the background.....prominent have been Rob(AZROB) and his wife Michelle, and Mark(Seadweller) and his wife Barb.....and there has been considerable generosity from many with the raffle prizes that have been provided!

Most of the people on here don't know what you and Fabiola did...with taking Ximena and Maria to San Luis for the testing, the stay overnight, and even running her around town trying to find out where and how to get the testing done....PLUS kicking in a BUNCH of $$ for the actual testing, the transportation, food, etc.

I received some AWESOME News this morning in an email from mi amigo Harold a.k.a. trade

Quoting Harold, "Kathy & I brought Ximena's test results back to the US, we showed them to St Andrews Clinica and they are willing to help her."

Blanca, with LA ESPERANZA PARA UNA NUEVA VIDA called this afternoon, she has arranged a visa for Jimena to cross the border on 1-05-2012 so she can be fitted with the device in Nogales, Arizona for FREE at St. Andrews Childrens Clinic. We only need transportation, lodging and food money. Jimena will be 1 of probably a couple hundred kids from Mexico, the clinic will attend to that day. I only hope they read the results from San Luis correctly. Thats some really good news.

Yes Bill, this is good news... Blanca stopped by this morning and told us the same news... I wonder if there is a way to contact St. Andrews Clinic to check and see if they are correctly reading the results from San Luis... I will be seeing Blanca this weekend and I will double check with her and also see if she has a case number to refer to when seeking info about Ximenas case, so we can follow up and confirm with St. Andrews Childrens Clinic...

:gradea::party::party::party::party::party::party::party::party::party::party::party::party::lobster: The concert is just somthing that started out of the blue to help out a little girl with hearing loss. Did I think it would take on this type of magnitude absolutely not. Michelle and I came up with an idea sat down with Mark then with Bill and Joe over at Max's one morning and said wouldn't it be cool if we could get 75 people to show up. A few post later and tons of comments both good and bad and here we are a few days from the event. There will be alot of people to thank when this is over and expect a full report on Saturday or Sunday morning. The issue is a few people have offered to donate items and we have yet to see them but I am sure they will come thru in the end. As it stands I think final count is 6 condos, Complete open water scuba class, Brand new bike (some kinda hybrid) from Rc. Bicycles, Awesome wine and cheese basket from Angela and Scott Scriver, 2 custom Skim boreds from Tracy boreds (these are the ones you see at Sharkbite and round town), food gift certificates for down south and up north. So if you are going to be anywhere in the northeren hemisphere you should do your best to make it to the party. Money will go towards a good cause and you can listen to some great music from Mark Mulligan, Sam Rainwaterm And the awesome haromonica player John Creed.

I am not sure what will happen this trip, but at least they are looking at her. I think there is some confusion as to what she needs.
