Got a new 23 ft trophy walkaround boat about a year ago and have taken it down to mexico a couple of times. my dad and i figured out how to catch the bait. we think we have found a couple reefs because we have caught triggers on them but havent had any action with our live baits so nothin too big yet.
One thing I've found is that the larger fish tend to hang on the edges (slopes) of the reefs- usually the triggers are on top.
One tactic I used before I had a good collection of underwater reef coordinates build up was to head for Bird island- there is lots of underwater structure on the West and North ends- just beware of the widow maker rocks at low tide (always keep a daily tide chart with you when you are out there). The area around the widow makers requires careful navigation, but it is always productive fishing grounds.
Go to phoenix sportsfishing and get a super grouper book. All these reefs in the book are grouper producers. Hang out at Safe Marina and get to know us guys. There is a lot of good info passed along there. Read these reports for more info.
