Does anyone have any info on the 13 bodies that were discovered??
joanC
Body count is now 42
Idyllwild
42+ is a lot of missing people. I’ve never heard of any missing gringos. Maybe some could be migrants, but even 3 or 4 missing locals should have made the news. Obviously this group was out looking for missing family members, so they knew something I didn’t.

I guess I was late to the news. Here is an article for those who might not have heard

Mass grave was discovered half way down the road to the oyster farm and then 1/4 mile south on a cross road.

That was my reaction. Does not say how long they were searching but that number found in 3 days? They must have had some information. There have been stories about how bodies end up out in the desert. I'm not gonna repeat them though !!

In reality the count would be almost an average weekend in Chicago.

Come on, only about 11 homicides per week, only 561 last year, they're trying. Sad that anyone has to be killed anywhere.

My niece is an ER doc in Chicago and although my death count comparison may be off the number of people shot but not killed in Chicago is a much higher number. I believe that on both sides of the border the death count would change along with the dynamic if all drugs were legalized.
mondone
Been here at the beach since Saturday morning and there is little to no concern by the locals here. Bigger story in the States apparently.
mexicoruss
It's a big story everywhere because of its shock value. Look up how many people are missing in the USA at any given moment in time. It is estimated that 90,000 people or more are missing. Many are found but many are not found, where are they?
It is disturbing to us that this happened or happens but it is unique to a limited portion of our population. The saying when translated from Spanish makes sense....."If you don't touch it..... it won't touch you, however if you touch it.....it becomes you" it's sad but true

I definitely feel more at ease in Penasco than most big US cities. The gang activity in those places is bad.
What Russ said is so true.
Petrose
Be real. If a US resort community the same size as Penosco had the same thing happen the news would be much more dramatic. But because it happened in a resort community in Mexico it's not spun up like in the US because this IS the norm in Mexico. Just another "Move on folks, nothing to see here "
Idyllwild
Here is just released homicide data on the 50 “most dangerous“ metropolitan areas in Mexico.

https://elcri.men/en/municipios-mas-violentos.html

Many of these are coastal tourist destinations.

https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/coastal-tourist-destinations-among-most-violent-locations/

The mass grave may not help our next ranking, but we look pretty good compared to some of the alternatives like Rosarito.

Let's see, the total travel time is the same, I'm just not waiting in line for 2+ hours,

Or I could join the dozens of people who vacation at the rough areas of Chicago. SMH
audsley
Just to put things in perspective, Mexico ranks 22nd in the world for homicide rates at 21.5 per 100,000 population. The US ranks 111th with a rate of 4.7 per 100K. Just sayin'...

I agree with Petros. If 42 bodies were dug up in Ft. Lauderdale, the entire US would know it. And we might even find out who was behind it.

Say what you want about Chicago, but I've never known Chicago to put on a show like they saw in Culiacan the other day.

Buffalo Marty
There are 2 sides to the Mexico violence "argument" that can both be true at the same time:
(A) certain types of shocking events such as mass graves/assassination of public officials/etc are unthinkable to the average US observer and are symbolic of sickening levels of corruption and impunity in Mexico
(B) 99% of the victims in these shocking events were involved in the drug trade in one way or another (either participating in it or fighting against it) and thus the potential risk to the average guy walking down the Malecon with a beer is almost invisibly low.
As I said, it is possible (and I think likely) that both (A) and (B) are true at the same time.
audsley
I agree that A and B are both generally true, which is why I still go to Mexico. But I don't like hearing the US is just as dangerous because that simply isn't true. One rule applies in both countries. If you live a high risk lifestyle (drug dealing, gang membership, etc.), you're far, far more likely to be killed than if you have a more conventional lifestyle. In Mexico and other Latin American countries, criminal gangs have become so entrenched and pervasive that far more people are living that lifestyle even though many probably didn't choose it. I've read that many Mexicans feel their government leans too heavily on victims' involvement in illegal activities as an excuse for rampant murder. Mexico needs to complete re-tool its criminal justice system from the courts through the police and into the prisons. Most Latin American countries have about a 98% "impunity rate" meaning that for every serious crime (murder, rape, armed robbery and assault) reported, 98% don't result in anyone being punished. Mexico is no exception. Simply put, they haven't caught and locked enough of the bad guys. Instead the bad guys remain out there running around free and the poison just spreads.

Meanwhile, in this country a criminal justice "reform" movement is trying to convince us we have too many people locked up and that's unfair, inhumane and expensive. Bleeding heart Democrats are pushing it and tightwad Republicans who never saw a public expenditure they wouldn't like to cut are getting on board. Pretty soon we'll have more sh*tbirds on our streets too.

Many of the bodies here in the USA are dumped into commercial trash bins out of convenience.
At the collection stations hubs in Phx and other cities bodies are found regularly.
Talk to some of the workers at them, they have many stories to tell.

So true. I has already spread to the highest office in the land when you have a sh*t bird in the Whitehouse modeling and defending being immoral and a crook.
It's not just that locking up too many people is unfair, it's stupid. The US needs to spend less energy on punitive measures of all kinds and start realistic preventative measures.

California has had a program to reduce their prison population by using early release of prisoners. They try to release non-violent offenders but many convictions are plead down from very violent crimes that were committed.
To be honest, the extreme partisanship being expressed above is exactly the problem in our government and both sides are not without guilt. Just expressing ridiculous rhetoric similar to what is written above fans the flames, creates polarization and exhibits sophomoric thought and behavior.

OK lets kill them all off . You decide who..

I would flip this on you and ask that you decide what violent offenders are let loose in your neighborhood. Nationally, in America, violent crime has been on a downward trend so something about the system must be working correctly. If you look at each individual law, the crime for breaking it and the punishment meeted out you would be hard pressed to argue against the sentence , especially with the victims in the same room as you. The system, except in the case of maybe non-violent drug offenders or victimless crimes Seems to be working. I was just making a flippant remark about hardened criminals who are repeat offenders of violent criminal acts. These types I could easily put down or put away for life.

So I guess it's OK like I mentioned for the right-wingers to pop up at any time with their BS. So, here's my shortlist.

“An anguished question from a Trump supporter: "Why do liberals think Trump supporters are stupid?"

The serious answer: Here’s what we really think about Trump supporters - the rich, the poor, the malignant, and the innocently well-meaning, the ones who think and the ones who don't...

That when you saw a man who had owned a fraudulent University, intent on scamming poor people, you thought, "Fine."

That when you saw a man who had made it his business practice to stiff his creditors, you said, "Okay."

That when you heard him proudly brag about his own history of sexual abuse, you said, "No problem."

That when he made up stories about seeing Muslim-Americans in the thousands cheering the destruction of the World Trade Center, you said, "Not an issue."

That when you saw him brag that he could shoot a man on Fifth Avenue and you wouldn't care, you chirped, "He sure knows me."

That when you heard him illustrate his own character by telling that story about the elderly guest bleeding on the floor at his country club, about how he turned his back, and how it was all an imposition on him, you said, "That's cool!"

That when you saw him mock the disabled, you thought it was the funniest thing you ever saw.

That when you heard him brag that he doesn't read books, you said, "Well, who has time?"

That when the Central Park Five were compensated as innocent men convicted of a crime they didn't commit, and he angrily said that they should still be in prison, you said, "That makes sense."

That when you heard him tell his supporters to beat up protesters, and that he would hire attorneys, you thought, "Yes!"

That when you heard him tell one rally to confiscate a man's coat before throwing him out into the freezing cold, you said, "What a great guy!"

That you have watched the parade of neo-Nazis and white supremacists with whom he curries favor, while refusing to condemn outright Nazis, and you have said, "Thumbs up!"

That you hear him unable to talk to foreign dignitaries without insulting their countries and demanding that they praise his electoral win, you said, "That's the way I want my President to be."

That you have watched him remove expertise from all layers of government in favor of people who make money off of eliminating protections in the industries they're supposed to be regulating, and you have said, "What a genius!"

That you have heard him continue to profit from his businesses, in part by leveraging his position as President, to the point of overcharging the Secret Service for space in the properties he owns, and you have said, "That's smart!"

That you have heard him say that it was difficult to help Puerto Rico because it was in the middle of water, and you have said, "That makes sense."

That you have seen him start fights with every country from Canada to New Zealand, while praising Russia and quote, "falling in love" with the dictator of North Korea, and you have said, "That's statesmanship!"

That Trump separated children from their families and put them in cages, managed to lose track of 1500 kids. has opened a tent city incarceration camp in the desert in Texas - he explains that they’re just “animals,” - and you say, “well, ok then.”

That you have witnessed all the thousand and one other manifestations of corruption and low moral character and outright animalistic rudeness and contempt for you, the working American voter, and you still show up grinning and wearing your MAGA hats and threatening to beat up anybody who says otherwise.

What you don't get, Trump supporters in 2018, is that succumbing to frustration and thinking of you as stupid may be wrong and unhelpful, but it's also...hear me...charitable.

Let's see if I, a progressive, gets the same consideration.

Specific. I watched the Democrats getting slammed on here for no other purpose but politics, and almost always without a response of any kind except from a liked-minded member. That was OK with you. Why?
Southbeacher
The “slamming” has – for years – come from both sides. And yes – the lack of response is okay with me because to respond to partisan comments on this venue is to take the bait.

Remember the shot out at the hotel on sandy beach awhile back. That was in RP. No one but the military knew it was going to go down.

Yep a week before X-mas 2013 at the Bella Serena Resort.
There were people driving the resort loop doing FB videos of the dead victims
that were left on the roadside for 5+ hours after it happened.
You don't see that in the USA. (either censorship or we're more civil here)?

Many here in the states can't even look at a whole-body frying Chicken, and more than a few would run out the room, not laugh if you walked it around holding it up by its legs. I remember, and not too long ago when a man was left in the middle of Ferguson street for 4 hours after he was shot right here in the states.

My niece is an ER doc in Chicago and although my death count comparison may be off the number of people shot but not killed in Chicago is a much higher number. I believe that on both sides of the border the death count would change along with the dynamic if all drugs were legalized.

Just like alcohol it would eliminate the need for the Capones.

Yes the states are much better in our response time when called out for the murdered. Maybe if our children see what can happen when you make bad choices they may may make good choices. jmo

Here is just released homicide data on the 50 “most dangerous“ metropolitan areas in Mexico.

Many of these are coastal tourist destinations.

The mass grave may not help our next ranking, but we look pretty good compared to some of the alternatives like Rosarito.

I'm not afraid in Puerto Penasco. You have more chance of being shot and killed in the states. Up north where every idiot thinks they are John Wayne with their six shooters. Most are legally nuts (they get a check from the government that says so) and they're up here showing everyone that they ARE nuts. You can get shot in Phoenix just for pissing off another driver. People are just getting used to it. Till it happens to one of theirs
