At least he realized his mistake before it was too late - sailing into that pumice would have taken out the impellers in his cooling water pump and his engine would have overheated and quit, leaving them SOL with a volcano erupting nearby. Duhhhhhh.

Very cool incident, though. There's something you don't see everyday.
