This story vent viral in Mexico. Some crazy Russian tourists was making video blogs on how he goes around and verbally abuses local Mexicans. Local newspaper made a story about it and people got together online to go to this Russians residence and rough him up but he stabbed one of the kids and people went nuts and lynched the guy almost to death.

Pretty crappy thread right from the start...should have been down below in violance in Mexico or better yet not posted at all. Why are we even talking about a mentally ill/criminally insane Russian who ultimately cost a young Mexican man his life?? Reminds me of an episode from Criminal Minds which I despise.
Some youtubers saved his videos and made it into a movie with translation and it gives a picture of why he behaved that way. First videos were positive about mexico, he went there to work then things slowly started to go bad for him. It proves how a tourists who does not speak Spanish is treated in Mexico. He was treated poorly, basically ripped off at every chance. Then he started to make negative videos about mexico and Mexicans. Together with his mental illness it made it all much worse.

I don't live or work in Mexico but have been visiting on a regular basis for 25 years and have always been treated very well. Don't speak Spanish either, but never a problem due to that. I have always believed that a person will be treated the same way as they treat others and that has alway been the outcome of my experiences over the years in Mexico.

Great points. I don't speak Spanish either and there are those who think I don't speak English, either. I do try to learn a few new words every time I go there.
I find that if you ask for a translation, the folks love to help with it. I will not live long enough to become fluent, but at least I can say a few things to show I'm trying.

Absolutely. Be an ugly American (or Russian or Canadian or whatever), you'll get treated like one. Be polite and respectful, you'll usually be met with the same. I've found that to be true anywhere I've traveled. EXCEPT for that one time... (there's always an exception and this one caught me by complete surprise).
I keep a pile of loose peso change in one of the cupholders of my truck. For the one-armed guy at the border, for the street jugglers, for the kids with Styrofoam cups at stop lights, for whatever. So, we're finally just coming into town, stopped at the pedestrian overpass light. Scruffy little kid with a cup, begging for "Comida, comida!" Without looking or thinking, I reach into the cup holder and grab a handful of change and dump it into his cup. Well, he reaches into the cup, picks out some coins, and throws them through the window at me screaming "NO PENNIES!!!!" WTF? The wife and I were both just dumbfounded. Good thing the light changed because I was about to come out of the truck and kick that little bastard square in the ass!
Yeah, next time I'll give them pre-paid gift cards.

Last year when we went down. We are on main drag, come up to stop light and we are 3rd 4th car back. I see a guy panhandling on side first car rolls window down and gives the guy a cold bottle of water. He drinks half down while we are waiting and then throws the bottle half full back at the car that gave it to him then picks it up and throws it at the second car in line.
After that, I refuse to give hand outs here or there. People are unappreciative.
Pennies are pointless on both sides of the border. I always tell cashiers to keep em for the next guy. I say get rid of them altogether. Give everybody a year to cash em in and be done with it.
As said, the change was all denominations of pesos, a lot of diez coins. Those were worth nearly a buck a piece then, before the exchange rate went way up. There may have been a couple of pennies in there, but geez... beggars can be choosers?
I think there's some Mexican pesos coins that aren't even worth a penny. Tiny silver ones I've gotten as change.
