Melissa, somethings going on in Mexico. I took Fabi to see a nuerologist in Mexicali, from Japan, practicing in Mexico. He had American patients lined wall to wall, one couple from as far away as Houston, Texas.

Here's what's going on:
1. Medical costs are too high in the US;
2. People in the US can't afford insurance;
3. People in the US with insurance still can't afford medical treatment because of deductibles/copays;
4. People in the US are finally realizing that the US isn't the only place that has good doctors;
5. All of the above.

But...can the middle class afford these "offshore" medical treatments.....where their insurance will not cover it, or will cover very little?

2a - Even people who can afford insurance can't get it to do pre-existing conditions. (It's truly mind-boggling the minor conditions that insurance companies will use to deny coverage!)

Depends on the treatment. Sometimes paying the full cost "offshore" is cheaper than paying the deductible and the 20% or whatever the US insurance won't pick up.

In many cases the "offshore" treatments - including the travel costs - are lower than they are in the US. That doesn't mean that they can afford either choice. It just adds options.

Unless we're talking about treatments in Mexico (keeping travel costs at a minimum)....these "offshore" medical treatments(even rationalizing the "vacation" you have) is still beyond the means of most middle class....

On June 19th my husband had surgery to remove 2 inguinal hernias at Banner Thunderbird outpatient surgery center. We checked him in at 8:00 in the morning and were home by 2:00 in the afternoon. After all was said and done, including surgical center facility fee, surgeon's fee, anestheseologist fee, cardiologist for a pre-surgical EKG, the total cost was $41,000!!!!! I have a $3,000 deductible that we had only paid $800 of this year so far. So $2200 out of my pocket to make up the deductible and now we're responsible for the other 20%. Thank God for insurance, but c'mon, $41,000, really?????

Not necessarily. See my post above about how much it cost for my husband's hernia surgery. I could've flown to Rio for a medical vacation for what it's going to cost me in the end even after insurance pays their part.

And I consider myself a card-carrying member of the shrinking middle class.

It looks like a lot of cosmetic and wholistic treatment to me. I was wondering if he was the guy doing the fake stem cell stuff, but looks like no.

Melissa, I had 3 stents put in my right interior femoral artery in Jan. of 2011 at the Az Heart Hospital. I was in the hospital for 10 hours. The bill was 65,000.00 dollars. I was horrified.... I had to pay a bunch of little copays here and there but it wasn't more than a thousand. Thank God for the State of Az, where i work... But it's still horrifying how much hospitalizations can cost...

Was that the guy who used to have the office over near Bryans on Fremont, and also the one that is now the Emergency clinic by the Sonoran resorts?

I also saw someone post that the doctor operating that emergency clinic is really gouging in terms of costs!

I agree that medical costs in the uS can be outrageous...but what would the procedure costs have been in Rio (not the travel & vacation)...since your medical insurance would have paid little, if any of it.

I have great medical (BC/BS...but pay thru the nose for premiums)...and they negotiate unreal discounts with the hospitals and doctors...as much as 2/3....my hip replacement surgeon billed them $5175, and they "allowed" $2061.....

Good for you but it is one of the reasons the uninsured get raped. They make the discount up on the uninsured or underinsured. It all goes to Corp profits and others are paying for it. Totally unfair IMHO.

The Duck that used to be on Fremont is in the clinic, I think. There is a second guy out there doing the fake stem cell stuff. I researched his procedures extensively and the medical efficacy of his so called treatment does not hold up.
