Cholla Bay 4 Life
Normally I wouldn't be so quick to post but today we had a really weird experience arriving in Penasco. Approximately 1 mile North of Barbs Dog Rescue we had to come to a stop for a checkpoint. The men were wearing uniforms saying something minister federal or federal ministry of something presumably but I couldn't see. The quickly allowed the Mexican plated car ahead of us through however when we stopped the immediately pressed up about where we were coming from and where we were going which was a complete joke considering we're 5 miles out of PP and towing a boat. Clearly tourists. The man then said to pull over. Don't know why, for what, who these men were. No army no uniform I've ever in my life seen in Mexico. We pulled to the side of the road and another man said no over here. Over "there" was behind an outcrop of what I believe are Salt Cedar in front of a house or some brick and mortar establishment. It wasn't so much the checkpoint but how they were speaking to us. With an aggression almost. It was really really weird. I can honestly say I was a little scared considering I was not aware of there being any kind of checkpoint North of town. We both claimed we didn't speak spanish. When we pulled to the second spot behind the trees the guy wanted me to turn the engine off and get out of the vehicle. At this point which happened to be twice in one hour I played the handicap card to not get out of the vehicle for inspection. Finally after a tense 3 mintues of them going through shit they let us go but it was like be gone type of go, not like have a nice day, thank you. They were clearly irritated. Claudia heard one of the guys say to another in Spanish that they could have gotten $150 from me. I don't know. The whole situation was weird.
Trying to figure out if this was an official checkpoint and who the agency might have been.. Any help is appreciated. The uniforms were either dark brown or black shirts with kaki colored pants and bulletproof vests. I thought I read something about criminal on one of the vests but I was looking in the rearview mirror. I really felt like it had to do with organized crime. Like it was an organized crime unit maybe for the interior but after realizing we have nothing to do with organized crime and we're tourists here to vacation you would have thought it would have just been a nod and thank you have a nice day. I don't know how to describe it but it was just the way they were talking to me it was really really weird and north of town in the desert is different than ADUANA asking me for my boat registration or Guardia National.
Really trying to figure out WTF happened today because it really scared me and I go to Mexico A LOT
